Level Zero - Free Construct 2 Book!

by Tom | 24th, November 2015

A free book about Construct 2?

Yes! This book features tutorials on using Construct 2. Learn how to create your own mini games and publish them to app stores.

Who's written it?

Ankur Prasad

An expert in the game industry. Ankur has worked at Microsoft and currently resides at Amazon as the head of partner marketing.

Allen Wu

Founder of Wu Tango Media, an app development firm that's published 58 mobile games with more than 3.5 million downloads.

People often have an idea for a great mobile game. I don't know about you, but my friends and family are always coming to me with a new idea for a game!

We know that the satisfaction that comes from building your first game is unparalleled; after all, many of us spent countless hours playing classics like Tetris, Donkey Kong and Super Mario. (Some of us still do!) Unfortunately few people go on to build their first game. Finding the right tool and resources is often a barrier lots of aspiring game developers can't overcome.

This recently published book "Level 0" is a resource designed for the absolute beginner. You'll learn how to set up characters and backgrounds, apply in-game mechanics and implement if – then functions and end up with five fully functional mini-games. The book will also show you how to publish your games to app stores and make them available to millions of potential customers around the world. The goal of Level 0 is to give aspiring game developers the basic building blocks to apply their creativity and bring their vision to life. For example, one of the mini-games you’ll learn to build is a simple sound board app where you click on an image and the corresponding sound will play. Through this exercise, not only do you pick up the skills to build a virtual keyboard or maybe an educational app that teaches kids the sounds farm animals make but also learn how to use sound, music and touch functions that can be used for subsequent arcade and action games. Each of the 5 mini-games covered in the book has already been used by thousands of Construct 2 users to build their first game on Construct 2.

This book uses Construct 2 in all the featured tutorials. According to the authors, "Construct 2 is as easy as it gets for making a game". Spot on!

C'mon, gimme the download link!

It's avaliable on for a little over $3 USD, however we've managed to get permission to distribute it for free on Scirra for now!

And good news, Ankur tells us that there's a second book in development detailing how to build 3 classic arcade games. Keep your eye out!

Great book!
However 2 links for the assets are dead: [Hyperlink removed - users with less than 500 rep cannot post links]
and [Hyperlink removed - users with less than 500 rep cannot post links] so I can not do the tutorial.
Please publish the correct links. Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing that second book! Unlike certain competitors, I appreciate that when you say no programming required, the tutorials reflect that.

First hiccup I've noticed is top of page 121: "Remember that each item in the same column will have the same Y coordinates and each item in the same row will have the same X coordinates."

It's the inverse of that. Columns go up and down, so those images will all have the same X coordinate. Y coordinate stays the same left to right. Example image looks right, though.

Page 129 doesn't list "Life.png" among the assets to import. Up until this point, I don't believe it's been mentioned how to import multiple sprites at once, making this quite tedious. For instance, even just knowing that I could drag a PNG from the folder right onto the layout, and it would automatically create a sprite object with the same name as the file, would have saved a bunch of time.

Excellent guide for starters to help them find their feet in an exciting, exploratory, experimental and even challenging way incrementally from the foundation up. Good on you @Tom!
