I'm not sure I get exactly what you mean, you talk about avoiding damage and then falling through platforms. Do you mean just avoiding fall damage if the player lands on his legs or something?

You could just make 2 "hit" boxes, one that is pinned to the upper-body for damage collisions and another set to the legs for platforming collisions.
