Anyone tested performance of Metro Apps?

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

Post » Fri Mar 09, 2012 11:08 am

Hello everyone

Just wanted to know how people have fared in testing metro apps and their performance. Internet Explorer has been awful up to this point... Does it now support WebGl and is it able to run a complex game?

If it is, that's amazing. This could be the next big break for C2 developers.

No WebGL for IE.
There's a webgl plugin though, but most users won't have that installed.

I would still ove to get some sort of guide how to integrate c2 with visual studio to make a metro app

In my computer Internet Explorer is way faster than Chrome. It's actually quite amazing speed for a browser without WebGL. Firefox has lot of work to do. WebGL has it's own security issues and no support with mobile devices.

@nemo: WebGL doesn't have security issues, that's just Microsoft propaganda.

I did run some tests on IE10 and it's a bit faster than IE9. No WebGL still, but it's about on par with Chrome's 2D canvas, which is still 2 to 2.5 times slower than WebGL. To be honest, unless you have thousands of sprites on screen at once you probably won't see any performance difference, but when we add WebGL shaders they won't work on IE10.

Great. So we get 2-2.5 times slower then our peak rates at the moment...

@Ashley, you say 'thousands of sprites', but really I have struggled with performance my entire life with C2, and certainly do not display thousands of sprites!

Well its not called Metro Games, so the fact that you can do anything resembling a game is pretty good, especially considering its javascript in IE on your desktop. newt2012-03-09 20:33:17

Can not even run a game made ??for the new version. Visual Studio each time an error.
In fullscreen without webGl:
-------
Unhandled exception at line 843, column 5 in ms-appx://abc8f6ae-7c03-4469-a5f2-ef3268282f69-8q94vvp0nn14t/c2runtime.js
0x800a1391 - JavaScript runtime error: 'log' is undefined
File: c2runtime.js, line: 843 column: 5
-------

In fullscreen with webGl:
-------
Unhandled exception at line 1560, column 5 in ms-appx://cd81c334-84f8-47df-adab-6a4ea1b3aab2-8q94vvp0nn14t/c2runtime.js
0x800a1391 - JavaScript runtime error: 'log' is undefined
File: c2runtime.js, line: 1560 column: 5
-------

In what may be the problem?

@allxumuk You'll want to ask @Ashley about that...
