"Baking" Playback Rate

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

Post » Mon Apr 28, 2014 9:09 pm

I've been messing with playback rate and want to bake it into the audio file. I'm using Adobe Audition, but can't work out how to convert playback rate into 'Stretch and Pitch' or similar effect.

Any help would be swell.

I do a lot of sound, so I might be able to help. But what do you want to do exactly with the wave form? Some of your terminology is a bit foreign to me. Could you explain in more detail please :D

[email protected] If you want to stretch, change the pitch and then export, I'll be honest, don't know how to do it in AA, but I know how to do it in daws. You can just download www.reaper.fm , which is free ( and only 8mb ), insert wav in to the track, Alt+LBM grab by a side of the wav form and just stretch it, and for pitch you just insert the fx on the wav channel ( plugin suite comes with reaper ). Once you happy with how it sounds just export the file. Or just pm it to me, with directions and I will do it for you in 2 minutes :D

I believe Audacity can also do this with the Effect: Sliding Time Scale/Pitch Shift

Thanks for the replies guys!

@megatronx so I think I want to change the speed. Playback rate is described as follows:

Indicates the current playback speed of the audio/video.
Example values:
1.0 is normal speed
0.5 is half speed (slower)
2.0 is double speed (faster)
-1.0 is backwards, normal speed
-0.5 is backwards, half speed

In Adobe Audition the only option related to speed is 'Stretch and Pitch':

So if my playback rate is 0.1, what does that convert to in stretch/pitch and pitch shift? I tried stretch 1000% (0.1 speed = 1000% stretch) but the stretch maximum value is 800%.

You are aware it is actually a shareware and after 60 days you either delete it or buy a license, right ?

Audition may be a bit too in depth for what you need to do, as it seems to give you a bit more control than you really need. The stretch is the time domain and the pitch shift is the frequency domain, and it is generally more suited to adjusting speech from what I can tell. But it seems that as long as you keep 'Lock Stretch and Pitch Shift' ticked then it should keep the correct behaviour as long as you change the 'Stretch' percentage. So 100% is regular, 50% is x2 playback etc... I'm not sure off the top of my head why the 800% limit is there but it's safe to say that you don't want to be shifting tihngs that far generally. But if you want to hit 1000%, run it twice on the same sample - 500% the first time and 500% the second time should get you the same result

Shouldn't it be 500% the first time and 200% the second time? Otherwise you end up with a 2500% stretch

@Fimbul Yes you're right, I knew something didn't seem right but I tested it quickly with different numbers and it sounded correct, typical!

@thehen By that logic what you should really do is run it once at 500% and then once more at 200% to half it again like Fimbul says. But still that's a long way to be pushing a sample so ensure you use sounds with the highest sample rate you can manage, to preserve as much quality as you can. I think Audition is a bit confusing in the way it presents things, there's probably a much simpler pitch shifting tool out there - Audacity is free but the effects are pretty simple, that's probably a better option

I just realised what I did - I quickly rendered one at 400% and then ran 200% twice on the original and got the same result without realising that I was effectively just halving it twice, ie the same as 400%. It's been a long day, I need to go home and lie down...
