C3 - Preview on iPhone

Post » Wed May 17, 2017 8:48 am

Hi guys

In C2, I could preview over wifi. In C3 I can only find the remote preview option, which doesn't work on iPhone.

Is there any way I can preview my project on iPhone/iPad?

Thank you in advance :)

Not yet I'm afraid, but Apple are working on WebRTC for Safari which should allow remote preview to work.

Hi @Ashley

Thank you for the reply. That's a bit of a bummer, hope they get on to it soon.

So what is the correct way to preview an app on an iPhone / iPad at the moment?

Right now you have to export and publish the game to run it on iOS. We're looking in to other options to make this more convenient.

So at the moment I can't really make iOS apps with construct 3? It's a shame, I really love construct but things like this are basically making it impossible for me to use it.

It's not really practical to compile and install the app every time I make a small change and want to see how it works, it would take forever.

Is there any chance this will be fixed in the short term? I've been thinking about paying the subscription but there are so many worrying things like this, still haven't figured out why the layout screen is completely blank on my mac pro either.

@shortwave You could export for the web and run it on a http server on your computer. That would allow you to connect from your phone over the local network. There's plenty of options for HTTP servers depending on your level of experience.

In terms of simple ones there's applications like:
MAMPhttps://www.mamp.info/en/
XAMPPhttps://www.apachefriends.org/index.html

If your worried they are a little too heavyweight you could use:
NGINXhttps://www.nginx.com/resources/wiki/start/topics/tutorials/install/
Apachehttps://httpd.apache.org/

If your comfortable with a bit of command line then you could use:
Python SimpleHTTPServerhttp://2ality.com/2014/06/simple-http-server.html

Or for something a little more custom:
Node.js http modulehttps://nodejs.org/api/http.html

Once you have a server set up all you need to do is to copy the export into the servers root folder and type in it's address on your phone. It's slower than using remote preview but it's still fairly fast. In the past I've used all of the above for various things, MAMP was probably the easiest to set up but it does include a database engine and PHP which you don't really need. If you know JavaScript then you can create a simple HTTP server in Node.js with 10 lines of code.

Also if iOS 11 supports WebRTC DataChannels, Remote Preview could work right away with that.

I've just installed iOS 11 to test this but the game jam license has finished. Does anybody else have iOS 11 installed? Would you be able to check if the remote preview is working?
