Give Blender a try. I've also used 3ds Max and Cinema 4D, but they're look complicated.

@Fengist - I've used Wings before, but it don't have any animation features.

@tetriser Winds3d to model, export as .obj. DazStudio to animate. And, if you decide to work in 3D, I know for a fact the models look just fine in Unity.
