Clothing, is it possible?

  • I was making a RPG in the style of The Sims or MySims in Adobe Flash CS3, but I started playing with Construct, and I like it so much I want to make the game in Construct instead of Flash. However, I have some rather advanced features planned, and I'm not sure Construct is able to adopt such functions just yet.

One such feature is the ability to change various parts of your body. I'm keeping it simple and only having two parts to your body: the body and the head. The body is one big suit you can change at a clothing store or in your bedroom. The head is set during character creation from a drop-down box.

Do you know how I could go about adding this feature to a Construct game project? What would be most efficient?

  • I'd recommend waiting until 1.0 before starting serious projects, because the current release has known bugs that may interrupt your progress. Still, you can achieve what you want by maybe using different sprites for different pieces of clothing, and different animations for different styles (eg. coat, jumper, shirt etc). You could also use the colour filter to change the colour of the clothes: draw the clothes white, and applying a filter will allow you to make the clothes any colour.

  • Depends on how much cloth/armors and headgear you want to create if too much to create a sprites of every version of it, then you should try create bodies without heads that would be main characters.

    Here's an example

  • Doppel, that cap is very helpful... thanks.

I was surprised at how simple that was. Now, I can't seem to figure out how to set an animation for walking in each direction. Any help is appreciated. I feel like such a newb.

  • Dont play with animations they are bugged and not fully written.

  • Instead of animation you could try to create your own skeletal animation system (or ragdoll system using physics object behaviour and hinges) and that would just be a matter of rotating the clothing objects into position (although you will have to figure out the exact positions and angles, you could create a program to give you the values and etc) on the plus side, you dont have to animate each piece of clothing to fit onto the body. Here is a link to more information about Skeletal Animation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeletal_animation

  • Since the animation options aren't ready, I'll just wait on that.

  • Doppel, that CAP doesn't seem to work for me. It says that ELSE is not allowed as the first condition. I'm using version 0.96 of Construct; any ways for me to fix that?

Jayjay, experimenting with using some very basic skeletal animation for a zombie game. Construct seems to handle them much better than most game making software

Doesnt work for me either... probably a bug or Ashley changed something in logical manner.

Edit: Well anyway here's repaired cap

Oh nice! How well is it working?

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Haha, overall looks OK, but unlike with 3d, it's a bit tough to get the third dimension looking right. But, I did make a bunch of zombies that went with just fine with it. I love Construct's containers

On the other hand... maybe I'll scrap the project altogether since a great zombie sandbox game just got advertised on TIGSource

Nah dont scrap it just because someone else is making one, unless your making a game to sell, you make games for yourself and if the other one turns out to have stuff you dislike you can make your own one better! Although, if you do scrap it, can you put up a cap showing your skeletal animation system thingy? If it can be salvaged from the other code people create games with a Soldat style (http://www.soldat.pl)
