Construct 2 - Only A Toy?

Casino? money? who knows? but the target is the same!

    I don't know guys... but the more I play around and learn Construct 2 it feels like Construct 2 itself is in such an early stage product-wise to even consider being serious with it. Everyday I see more and more weaknesses in it which forces me look at it more of a toy, rather than a professional product that will bring your game to Google/Apple stores.

    For example: Things changes constantly with new updates and sometimes drastically too. Don't get me wrong, updates are good when bugs are fixed and improvements implemented. But here, in Construct 2 compared to other (finished) products out there, we often get huge vital functions totally removed and new (dare I say bugged and badly documented) solutions replace them just to make your game incompatible again. An example is one forum post I've read the other day that Local Storage does not work on games exported to Android.

    1. How vital isn't it to be able to save a player's highscore and such?

    2. How pissed off wouldn't hundreds or thousands of players be if your product all of a sudden cant, let's say... read their highscore?

    3. How many bad ratings wouldn't your app get on the Google/Apple store?

    Also imagine putting down months of work just to find that a new update will ruin your whole game, because things has changed so dramatically. If this happens and you for example need to make a small update to your game but are forced to almost remake it - is why Construct 2 feels incomplete as a product to me. The versioning system also may suggest that (v0.206 and not v1.206 ?)

    I'm aware of that seeing this from an outsider perspective might collide with some of your guys perspectives, and you may dislike what I said with this post.

    Another example: Is there real guidance and support from Scirra to what you do AFTER your game is finished in Construct 2?

    I don't know, maybe I'm just disappointed and need to ventilate cause I've wasted months learning C2 and getting to a point where I understand that the product feels unfinished and doesn't suit my and other's needs and demands to actually being able in an easy way to release a product on web stores and maybe earning some money from it too.

    Until Construct 2 doesn't need these radical changes anymore it can't be considered a professional, reliable and finished product.

    I can't confirm that local storage is not working on android, it's working and always worked on android, C2's default save/load functions are working absolutely like local storage. If that's not working for you, just file a bug, and Ashley will fix it. I can't understand in what exactly you dissapointed.

    In the three years I've used Construct 2, I can only think of one time Scirra has "removed" a function - and that was CocoonJS, which is was basically defunct.

    And also not even removed! It was still there! To my knowledge, Scirra has never "totally removed" any stabled feature. The closest I can think of is experimental features like 30FPS mode, which never saw a stable release.

    The argument as to whether C2 is a "toy" is a stupid one. It's a tool. It's capabilities are almost entirely down to the user.

    Construct 2 Business license is €329.99. That is not exactly candy money, if you know what I mean. It's lots of money. For that I get an unfinished, unreliable product which causes more work and headache for me than anything. With very little or no support finishing a game and even less support of making money with my game.

    I might sound harsh, but I'm truly disappointed with the whole picture so to speak, of Construct 2.

    The closest I can think of is experimental features like 30FPS mode, which never saw a stable release..

    The new "Set minimum framerate" action? Is it so bad?

    Err, I'm a Unity guy and I think C2 is a neat engine. You're not gonna build Fallout in it, but it sounds like you are either are grumpy that it still requires you to actually develop/design a game(GDD), or you're just trollin' cause you're bored. Post your current build, ask a question, I'm sure the guys can help if you've gotten that far.

    Can you tell us again in what exactly you dissapointed? Local storage is working everywhere, if you don't like it, use deprecated WebStorage instead (it's not removed).

    If someone can create a game like "Mortar Melon" with it, which has more than 750.000 downloads on the windows store, I guess it might still just be a toy, but a great one..

    People are entitled to their own opinion - pro or con - but why they always feel the need to post their views on here rather than just move on always baffles me.

    If you've made up your mind, then fine - move on and good luck.

    I have to say that there are some frustrating aspects to working with c2 (performance of html5 when wrapped on most mobiles, limited physics engine - these are my least favorite aspects of the engine). However, the editor is fantastic and, if you don't have the time or aptitude to learn to write in a programming language, c2 is empowering. I don't accept your point about it maybe being a toy - a phrase about workmen and tools comes to mind.

    So, I take it from your post that you are concerned about webstorage being deprecated? Why not just copy the webstorage plugin, keep it safe and, if necessary, re-add it to c2 if scirra decide to remove it completely?

    As I understand it, the webstorage plugin was deprecated only because the chrome store no longer permits the use of that api - so blaming scirra for its removal is somewhat misguided. If you're selling on the google store - exporting for android - how many of your players are really going to care if their local-to-their-phone high score is removed by an update to your free-to-play game? See the point about copying the webstorage plugin if you think it's really a problem...

    No, another feature that capped the max framerate to 30 fps for more stability (easier to reach), it just did not work at all and was removed rapidly after.

    You are entitled to your viewpoint.

    But, disappointment comes from 2 things:

    (1) The inability to use the tool.

    (2) The realization that it is limited.

    Note: Number 2, can only be used by users who have mastered the tool. In all honesty there really isn't much C2 can't do within the scope of what it was built for. It can go head to head with many products currently on the market. I own most of them, and this "toy" is pretty top notch.

    I understand where you are coming from, I have my own disappointments, but your disappointment I feel is more from an inability to use the tool, whilst mine are limitations outside of the scope of which construct was intended for.

    Like with everything,there are pros and cons to c2. Quite a few things I'd change and improve if i could, but once you know how to use it efficiently, you can come up with creative ways of doing things in it, otherwise you'd think are impossible.

    Im new to construct and just with basic logic im already building a pretty good tower defence game, and i dont even have 2 month in this program... i can tell you that this thing has a lot potential.
