  • I've got a rather ambitious game in mind. We're generally suggested to "wait until version 1.0 before trying something big". But I was wondering if the current version is stable enough to start with? Anything I should try to avoid or work around for now?

Oh, and does Construct support scripting?

  • construct supports python scripting, and you can write plugins in c++ using the sdk. i personally plan to start my big project in the near future regardless, but as an example, soldjahboy's tonks project stopped working with this latest version of construct. a few things i would advise is turn on automatic backups, and make sure to back up frequently and incrementally(mygame.cap, mygame1.cap). 98.9 is stable, so if that has the features you need start there, but yeah, if its a large project the safe bet would be to focus on testing stuff now, to see whether or not your game logic works, how graphical effects will look etc. by the time youre done testing all your game mechanics you should have a better idea about whether you want to trust the unstable versions or not

  • I would suggest prototyping the ideas you have, so that you'll be ready to get started on the big project with the stable release of Construct.

yeah you may as well just prototype them, it's still stable in many ways although there is still truck loads of bugs to be resolved though, so you'd be waiting a while.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • There were lots of big code changes from 0.98.9 to 0.99 which is why some people's files broke; from the current unstable release (0.99.3) to 1.0 there will only be bug fixes so it shouldn't break anything significantly. So I would recommend waiting for the next stable build then starting with that - in fact, I've started my own large project in the as-yet unreleased next build of Construct

  • Just don't minimize often for long periods of time - you'll sometimes get a nice crash when you restore.

release it! release it! what a tease!

  • I use 98.9 and it's stable for my bigger projects. I don't see a problem with starting now, but if you want to be safe wait until 1.0. (even at 1.0 don't expect it to be perfect; there are always new bugs which this relatively small community has yet to discover.) It never hurts to test things out, and making a complete game is really the ultimate bug-sweeping test, as it hits on every aspect of the program. Don't fall into the COOL! EASY PROGRAM! NAO I MAEK SUPER EPIC RPG! syndrome, because you will get discouraged quickly. My advice is to start with a small game and try to finish it, to test your eventing abilities.

It's Muz. From TDC. He's made games and stuff before

Anyway, my general response is "Don't use the beta unless you're willing to beta test." It's getting much more stable, yes, but you're still going to run into problems. And the bigger the project, the more frequently you will have problems.

But there's no reason not to test things out and plan your game while you wait for 1.0.
  • I would say generally if you use the last stable build (or even the latest build), provided you're only building up groundwork, you're unlikely to run into too many problems. Most of the remaining problems don't prohibit general work.

  • i've been planning and implementing framwork stuff for a while now and 99.3 is the best, most stable version so far. You'll need to do the framework stuff anyway before the actual work starts, so just get it going.

Lol, sorry muz, I don't hang around tdc. Sorry to noob preach .

Construct crashed when i was creating new sprite. Basicly what happendc i've started new project, i wanted to check something in event editor, but i forgoth that if there is no object on the layout there will be no options in event editor. so i went back to layout, and while creating new sprite when picture aditor started to load cons crashed. no sample cap becasue it was empty only with selected direct-x game project.

    I'll add to tracker.

  • Yeah, that's a known issue - when creating a new project, if you go to event editor before creating a sprite, it crashes. Simply add some object - mousekeyboard for example - before poking the event sheet.

Yo Muz, long time no see brother

Good to see you around here again. To answer your question, yes, the current builds are pretty good, but as Davioware suggested you should look at 0.98.9 if you want a solid build.

The next build for the 0.99 series shouldn't be far away, and there are some substantial bug fixes in there that should (hopefully) give us our next stable build.

Get started mang, I want to see what you can whip up with this bad boy.
