  • Hey guys, Im currently using the stable version of construct, 0.98.9 and tho Im enjoying its stability I often need help since Im still a beginner so I download others .cap to see what they did and how they did it but alot of times I cant run it because it requires the newer, unstable version of construct. Now should I switch to the newer one since it seems many people are using it or should I stick with what Im using?

  • You may as well use the latest, I don't see why you shouldn't.

  • Build Releases

    In short:

    • To help us test Construct and use the latest bleeding edge features, use the latest unstable build (0.99.3)
    • If you are making a game or working on something serious and you don't want bugs to get in your way, use the last stable build (0.98.9).
  • If you're a casual user, who uses Construct to develop, use the last stable build.

If you're a Construct enthusiast, who has a bit of time, and is willing to also test things, either install the unstable build alongside the stable one, or use the latest.

Whatever you do, if you use the latest unstable build, don't try and work on a substantial piece of work without backing up!

  • Heh, I've actually found that the "unstable" version is actually completely stable - not a single error or crash aside from my .exe somehow screwing up when I upload it in a zip (it works before I zip it, it works from the zip, but I upload it, then download it and open it, it won't run from the zip and it won't run after extraction - but the .cap is fine)

But so far, it's about twenty times more stable than the last version of Construct I used - and I'm willing to bet that with my luck, the "stable" one would crash constantly

  • Try Construct 3

  • 99.3 is the best version yet. I'd go with that one.

  • Despite having several all round improvements, I'd disagree till the next build, on the grounds that there have been some weird reported bugs you may want to avoid.

  • don't use 99.3 for serious work. It's has bugs and some features don't work as they're supposed to. Use 98.9 if you are actually working on a game.

  • Im not sure if this is correct or not but Ive experienced problem in the past

if I started using one version and then tried to open .cap in newer version .

The app would either not open at all or would crash right off the bat.

I always assumed that I should stick with one version until I completed my

program and that I should make a note of what version a particular .cap was

written in so as to be able to edit it in the same version if need be in the future.

I assume that if a newer version changes something that an older versions .cap

relies upon and you try to open it you well experience problems.

Like there was a version that had a "Start Of Application" event that I used and then the

next version got rid of the feature and my program crashed.

I dont know why they got rid of it--I think they thought that it was redundant with the

"Start of Layout" which is not true. But they kept the "End of Application" event...makes sense.

But anyway I believe you should take into consideration any new objects or behaviors and such

when changing versions as they may have differences that could mess with the way you

    program runs.

I could bewrong but my experience tells me otherwise.

  • Always read the changelogs. Changes like that are usually clearly outlined, eg. "Breaking change: 'Start of Application' removed, make sure you remove any events using it in your .cap or it will crash". I can't remember now why it was removed, but the changelog would've said why.

  • Thanks Ashley, I didnt know. Im new to the site and havent explored it much.

Didnt have internet for long time so friends would dowload the newest version for me.

So I didnt have the benefit of all this information...thats why Im kinda thinking that some of this information should be set with new version downloads but I understand the availability now and greatfully will check for any information I believe I may need. Previously I wasnt aware of the need for checking any change logs. Kinda a drag to be a neebee at times but also make life more exciting.

Love what you've all accomplished so far and cant wait to see what next.

Keep up the excellent work and dont forget to smile

  • I say go with 98.9. That's the version I'm using. It doesn't have all the spiffy new features, but certain things like sound and music work. You have a few more bug fixes about certain things in the latest version though, but the fact sound and music doesn't work in it is probably a bug too, so... Just download a few, try 'em out, I guess.

Sound and music work just fine in the latest versions for me, unless you're talking about playing files that are in the "Sound" and "Music" folders. The XAudio object only gives you the option of playing files from the "Files" folder for whatever reason.

  • <Kisai_Sakurai>: 99.72 ALMOST works right, but sound and music doesn't seem to work.

<deadeye>: what's up with the sound?

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Well, it won't play.

    <deadeye>: as resource?

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Yeah.

<deadeye>: kisai, could be the files folder thing

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Whaddaya mean?

<deadeye>: the sound and music folders aren't complete in 99.72

<deadeye>: you have to put the sounds in the files folder

<deadeye>: then they play fine from resources

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Does it play then?

    <deadeye>: yeah

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Oh...

    <deadeye>: works fine

<Kisai_Sakurai>: I should check. Because everything else kinda works exactly how I want for my project.

<Kisai_Sakurai>: I just spent the last minute testing that, making a new .cap where music plays on start up, and a sound effect plays on any key pressed... And holy shit, it DOES work that way!

    <deadeye>: yep

<deadeye>: bahaha kisai you posted too soon in that "which version" thread

    <deadeye>: classic

    <Kisai_Sakurai>: Damnation.
