Deployment

  • Hi.

I am interested in deploying this application to a school network.

I tried to search this forum for assistance, but didn't find anything.

I noticed that the construct setup file supports /silent and /verysilent switches, but despite using these, the C++ 2005 Redistributable and DirectX setup run during installation.

I have already updated these - is there a switch that the Construct setup exe supports to stop the C++ 2005 and DX setups from running as part of the Construct installation?

    TIA.

  • Try Construct 3

  • I don't think there's an installer option to stop that. If you've already got DirectX and the VC2005 redist installed on all the machines, I think you can just copy+paste the Construct program files folder around and Construct will run - IIRC the installer only copies the files and then launches the DX setup and VC2005 redist.

  • Thanks for the quick response.

    I will test this out.

  • Don't forget the installer creates the shortcuts too - you'll have to create the shortcuts yourself.

  • Thanks.

After having VC ++ 2005 SP1 and DX up to date (seems to require Feb 2010 SDK as well as all the way up to August 2009), the software runs, but reports an issue with one of the plugins - XBox360Controller.csx on launch, even though the file is present. (copied from a working "installer" installed PC)

To be honest, this is why I don't really hold with opensource - too many basic installation issues, and no useable deployment options.

    Thanks anyway.

  • Well, a lot of Open Source is basically Do-It-Yourself stuff. People make roof, the placing thereof is left to you.

  • Construct used to get the 360 error message as well on my computer until I updated vista recently. You might want to check for all available updates to Windows.

Fair criticism. I'll have a look at modifying the installer for the next build - I'll launch the DirectX and VC Redist setups as silent so they don't have to be clicked away (they need to be installed anyway). Would that help? As for the XBox360 controller issue, it might be a bug in the build, which version are you using? If you don't need XBox360 controller input, you can safely delete the .csx file and simply not use it.

I know open source has a reputation for DIY, but I don't think that's an excuse to be lazy - if there's a simple thing we can provide to simplify deployment we definitely should. Otherwise a lot of people might simply not use the program, which is pointless given all the work on the main program itself. So I'm open to suggestion and criticism, anyway.

lol, get the wife to do it, tell her she needs the exercise. It's perfectly safe, women love to be told that, 'onest!

  • FYI check the latest build 0.99.84. The XBox360 issue should be fixed, and the installer no longer launches the other two setups when run with /silent or /verysilent - it's a completely hands-free setup now (it doesn't attempt to install the VCRedist or DX update though).
