Dan Cook is an emeritus game designer whose last released games with his company spry fox did quite an impact in the world of gamers in (re)inventing some well established games genre.
In this (quick) talk, he gives 7 tools as well as a lot of insights on his professional experience.
You should go and read his blog : lostgardens.com with a great articles about game design and game grammar. (Dan Cook is somewhat of a researcher/thinker about game design and the workflow and meaning of making a game)

Every indie developer should bookmark Lost Garden. Dan Cook is a nuclear insight generator. I've lost count of all the different places I've seen his prototyping graphics appear, too.

Very interesting topic. Gaming companies should take the message of going back to the root of what makes a game fun to heart. Also, very good point about waiting until later to think about the artwork.

This is a remarkable talk, thanks! I followed your link to his site and found myself immersed in a fascinating application of "tightness" and "looseness" to game elements which I had to regretfully bail on, but I added him to my G+ circles and found that he had an equally insightful post on piracy, value, culture, and monetization as his most recent post. Thanks, Kyatric!RandomExile2012-08-27 01:15:26
