Duplicate object VS Effects. Which one takes more RAM?

Hi,
I have this doubt.
I'm making a forest with several layers, and in each layer the trees have different colors.

So, is it better to have different sprites for the trees or to have just one sprite and change the color with an effect?
I mean, which one is better for performance, memory, etc?

I suspect: use one sprite with a different animation frame for the different color. Shader effects can show down older systems and mobiles for sure. A single sprite will cause one draw call, even with different animation frames, so that will be the least demanding.
I only occasionally visit - I'm learning C# for Unity, but c2 is still a respectable game engine imo....
