  • Hey guys, I'm intending to start developing with Construct 2, but my main doubt is about what platforms the engine will support in the future. Is there any probability that the Construct 2 engine will be able to export to Xbox Live, PSN or even Wiiware/upcoming Nintendo Network? I know it may sound as some really noob question, but I'd like to know if it has ever been considered by the Construct developers. Such support would, of course, be awesome, but is there any chance of happening?

    Regards,

    Bonko

  • I'd like to know also, that would be a very nice feature. Note PSN and even Xbox live DL games are not just small flash games by any means, a 2d game would have to have some high production value and or alot

ALOT of work to compete, every game on PSN is usually 10$ or more so ur game would have to be well worth it, I know it sounds harsh but people are poor.

  • Probably in a few years, and if HTML5 really takes off.

  • There's no need for multiple identical threads - please keep it in one thread.

  • If Xbox or PS3 supported HTML5.

This alludes a full on browser.

  • Yeah, I know that Erndog2k :)

It's really a lot of hardworking to get a great and functional game.

Even with these minimal requirements we've got plenty of "not so great games" in both PSN and Live.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Oh, and I'm sorry for the double post... I posted it first in the "How do I..." folder and didn't know how to move it here (I thought the general folder was more appropriated for this kind of question) <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

    sorry again, my bad =)

    Guys, it's not that easy.

Apart from the Xbox360, all the other consoles (including the Nintendo DS) require a special Development Kit, and also a license for you to become a developer on those consoles.

Prices range from 3k to about 20k dollars each.

They all have their own development technologies - so I don't know if you can build a wrapper for each of them to make porting easier.

Let's just say that with Construct you'll be able to focus on making a nice game, that can be published on a wide range of mobile devices, and the internet.

So if you make a nice game, a game that has a good appeal and that you think will be profitable (or at least cover its own expenses if you have that "hardcore indie" vibe), you can:

1- Buy and Xbox360 (and own a PC): It is the cheapest console to develop - but of course it's where most of the competition is right now! You'll need to learn C# to work on your porting project, and (i think) 100 bucks to get a indie developer's license.

2- Get that amount of money - make a loan or take it from your savings - and start filing papers in order to get you a developer license.

Then you'll have to start working on that wrapper, or hire experienced people to do it!

3- Look for a publisher, tell them you are interested in selling your game in the console online stores. Maybe they can pay you upfront so you can get your desired console SDK, but I'm positive they won't trust you enough unless you can prove you have nice programming skills.

4- Look for a game developer company: You may be able to knock on a developer studio's door - already licensed, with an sdk and a dedicated team - and come up with a nice contract where you'll provide the art assets and your game designer's skiils (level, art and creative direction, etc), and they'll provide the programming work. You'll of course have to share the royalties, but your game is going to make it to a console store.

While it is not impossible, publishing a game on a console requires way more money, legal experience, and developing skills. But first of all, you have to have a nice game! Start building on that! ;-)

  • It's possible to support consoles, but not likely for a few years. One of two things have to happen:

    • consoles support HTML5, probably not until the next generation of hardware
    • we get enough resources to take on a new exporter, which probably won't happen for a few years

    Or there's option C...

    • consoles are killed off by phones and tablets so it doesn't matter any more!
  • Thank you Ashley, hope you guys get enough resources soon, you definitively deserve it! Construct is an amazing solution for us!!

And thanks everyone else for the replies!

In the best scenario let's hope next gen consoles support HTML5, the WiiU tablet controller would give us a lot of game design/mechanics possibilities.

From the present perspective, it doesn't seem that console will support html5 gaming (the vita doesn't and it's the most recent console out), and mobiles/tablets are not yet ready for html5 gaming either. (I haven't seen any performances results yet for html5 games on iPad3)

I don't see them overtaking consoles yet either.

Moreover, there probably will be a mobile/tablet audience share "opposing" the console share as it happened over the past years, I only foresee this tendancy to result in a reinforcement of two separated market shares with a more blurry audience/share in between.

If something like the rumor of a "Steam box" (a PC configuration in a kind of console presentation with the steam platform to handle distribution) was to come to reality, it would be an interesting platform to focus on too and that would change the current market as we know it.

  • I don't think it's going to happen.

If you want to make a PSN or XBLA game your are looking at some heavy costs. Their SDK's are 10k and their certification process can easily run you 50K. There is XBLIG but that isn't a business solution it's a hobby solution. Plus you can't even use unity on XBLIG.

I would love it if C2 was on the Xbox but the way the MS runs the Xbox publishing service I don't think it's highly likely.

The only way you will get onto XBLA is to make a free to play game and get people playing it and hopefully approach some publishers to help back your game. By the way, XBLA games cost around 750k to produce with art, programing and everything.

Many reliable sources are saying that's already happening. On one hand, Steam is revitalizing the indie PC market, and on the other, phones and tablets (as you say) are booming. And on the third hand, HTML5 seems to be catching on very fast. Chrome, Firefox, Metro are coming fast.

Nintendo had the first big loss they've had in quite a while. I don't like XBOX anyway, and I use my PS3 to play Blu-ray disks.

    Like, do I pay $30 for a game I'll play a few hours, or do I play $3 for one that might be almost as fun? In today's economy, I don't have $30 anyway. <img src="smileys/smiley6.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

3DS has a browser, so does PSP. Can you serve HTML5 games to them?

  • Isn't too late to support Xbox 360 and PS3 ? i keep hearing rumors about new xbox coming soon, also Sony still making new devices every six months beside PS3 XD, if C2 would support those platforms it's better be just yet released, otherwise if Ashley will work for it, it would be a waste of time, sadly most platforms have lifespan compared to PC.

Hmmm I don't know, I've been hearing that Nintendo, MS and Sony are intending to keep supporting their current consoles even during the next generation. Maybe those will be targeting other markets/countries, but it's almost certain that they'll keep the support. Just as an example, here in Brazil, MS just started producing the Xbox 360, and the PS2 is one of the best selling home consoles until today.

Anyway, C2 support to consoles would be awesome, but just as Ashley said, it may take some time, and, in my opinion, an .exe exporter would be just as great or even better, considering we could than monetize our games via Steam or related services.

    Sorry about my english if there's anything wrong <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />
