Export your project to consoles

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

Post » Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:08 am
It's possible to support consoles, but not likely for a few years. One of two things have to happen:

- consoles support HTML5, probably not until the next generation of hardware
- we get enough resources to take on a new exporter, which probably won't happen for a few years

Or there's option C...

- consoles are killed off by phones and tablets so it doesn't matter any more!
From the present perspective, it doesn't seem that console will support html5 gaming (the vita doesn't and it's the most recent console out), and mobiles/tablets are not yet ready for html5 gaming either. (I haven't seen any performances results yet for html5 games on iPad3)
I don't see them overtaking consoles yet either.

Moreover, there probably will be a mobile/tablet audience share "opposing" the console share as it happened over the past years, I only foresee this tendancy to result in a reinforcement of two separated market shares with a more blurry audience/share in between.

If something like the rumor of a "Steam box" (a PC configuration in a kind of console presentation with the steam platform to handle distribution) was to come to reality, it would be an interesting platform to focus on too and that would change the current market as we know it.

New to Construct ? Where to start

I don't think it's going to happen.

If you want to make a PSN or XBLA game your are looking at some heavy costs. Their SDK's are 10k and their certification process can easily run you 50K. There is XBLIG but that isn't a business solution it's a hobby solution. Plus you can't even use unity on XBLIG.

I would love it if C2 was on the Xbox but the way the MS runs the Xbox publishing service I don't think it's highly likely.

The only way you will get onto XBLA is to make a free to play game and get people playing it and hopefully approach some publishers to help back your game. By the way, XBLA games cost around 750k to produce with art, programing and everything.

Many reliable sources are saying that's already happening. On one hand, Steam is revitalizing the indie PC market, and on the other, phones and tablets (as you say) are booming. And on the third hand, HTML5 seems to be catching on very fast. Chrome, Firefox, Metro are coming fast.

Nintendo had the first big loss they've had in quite a while. I don't like XBOX anyway, and I use my PS3 to play Blu-ray disks.

Like, do I pay $30 for a game I'll play a few hours, or do I play $3 for one that might be almost as fun? In today's economy, I don't have $30 anyway.

3DS has a browser, so does PSP. Can you serve HTML5 games to them?

Isn't too late to support Xbox 360 and PS3 ? i keep hearing rumors about new xbox coming soon, also Sony still making new devices every six months beside PS3 XD, if C2 would support those platforms it's better be just yet released, otherwise if Ashley will work for it, it would be a waste of time, sadly most platforms have lifespan compared to PC.

Hmmm I don't know, I've been hearing that Nintendo, MS and Sony are intending to keep supporting their current consoles even during the next generation. Maybe those will be targeting other markets/countries, but it's almost certain that they'll keep the support. Just as an example, here in Brazil, MS just started producing the Xbox 360, and the PS2 is one of the best selling home consoles until today.

Anyway, C2 support to consoles would be awesome, but just as Ashley said, it may take some time, and, in my opinion, an .exe exporter would be just as great or even better, considering we could than monetize our games via Steam or related services.

Sorry about my english if there's anything wrong

Don't forget beside PC, exporter for Mac would be awesome too (either the DMG / APP format for the Mac Store)

It wont happen

As mentioned their SDKs are very expensive

Also, i don't see any way tablet or phones could replace dedicated gaming handhelds

My Sony tablet is lovely for what it is but it could never compete against a Vita or 3DS

Physical buttons, flash cards, analogue sticks and top quality games is what separates tablets and phones from dedicated gaming handhelds

Finally with current battery tech i'd absolutely hate to have one more use for my smart phone. It barely holds battery through the day as it is, i can't imagine gaming on it for longer stretches as welljn2002dk2012-03-26 21:33:23

Microsoft is currently running their student game development competition, Imagine Cup and In their rules for the Xbox/Windows it states:

Game Design: Xbox/Windows Competition: Rules and Regulations
Required Technologies (Rounds 2 and 3):
Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0 or HTML5 or Silverlight (or any combination)

HTML5 is not allowed in any other category.
Thank you Ashley, hope you guys get enough resources soon, you definitively deserve it! Construct is an amazing solution for us!!

And thanks everyone else for the replies!

In the best scenario let's hope next gen consoles support HTML5, the WiiU tablet controller would give us a lot of game design/mechanics possibilities.

It would be a dream come true to make a game that plays on a Nintendo system.

I think the best thing to do is hope consoles start supporting HTML5. Everyone has their favourite console, and it's far too much work to think about porting our engine to every console out there. If they support HTML5, then we can get games on them without doing any extra work.
