On Reddit just sign up an account and the best way to understand it is to just browse interesting posts and comment on them :)

Reddit is basically split into lots of sub sites called 'subreddits'. You pick ones you're interested in, for example http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev and you comment on submissions and perhaps submit your own links as well for others to comment on.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Now on to Google+. I know some programmers are gung ho on G+ and I'm reading an eBook on it now by Guy Kawasaki.
