If the developerss do deside to charge for it (hope not)
I would think they should only charge for comercial creations.
Alternatively, it may suffer from the free=bad mentality :<[/quote:20qo7cqg]
Maybe, but if the program really is stable and powerful, it should gain a reputation to topple that mentality. Some good finished games in Construct, for example, could disprove that.

We're all in full time education, so even if we went commercial, we don't really have the time for all the sales, admin, updates and support that we'd be obliged to perform with a commercial project. We've been going a couple of years as a free project though, and it seems to have worked out OK so far.
The current aim of Construct is to establish it as a serious game creation tool used by as many professionals as possible. The best way to get it used is for it to be free :).[/quote:1kz8iq4s]
I believe that is one of the reasons why Microsoft also offers tools for free: to get people use Microsoft products and keep using Microsoft products.
I think that the problem lies within avaible platforms. The biggest 2d market is on virtual consoles, and thats where the ppl spend their money, i think.[/quote:12b1xfl1]
Nah, these days, it's all about flocking to the iPhone and trying to launch some one dollar creations in hopes of getting sales. People are hyped up about the potential marketshare because a minority of developers were able to launch a hit on that thing. I wouldn't mind more deployment options, but the PC is where the cool cats roam.

I can't think of many people that are concerned about that for any free OSS project. The assumption that something free can't be good is more common.

It's a material world. I hope construct brings you guys more reward than just our love and thanks. It being free to use doesn't mean that it can't generate revenue. I think Construct is in a much better position than Microsoft's own XNA to gather interest from indie game developers on the Windows platform. If I were Microsoft I'd sponsor Construct in a heartbeat.

Don't forget we aren't the only ones who are able to use the program. I do believe the devs didn't just wake up one day and say "hmmm lets make a program for somebody else to use".
Also dont forget there are other ways to generate revenue. Ashley has stated he wants plugs to be licensed however the maker wishes.

Old versions and features from old versions should remain free, and compile buttons should remain free, since you can already do it. Anything new could be in "Construct Pro" if you follow me. Seriously, though, I would not have even tried Construct if it cost money.

haven't read entire thread, but if it becomes necessary to increase revenue, a friendly business model would be to allow anyone to download fully featured construct for free, but require a watermark when the game starts up advertising construct. paid users can remove watermark.
