Grid-based spreading gas

I need a way to make spreading gas so I can make spaceship hull breaches work right. If a ship wall has health below fifty then check if it is next to a ship floor tile. If it is, spawn a vacuum tile on that floor tile, then repeat the check. I've tried doing distance checks and it doesn't work like a gas, e.g. It spreads more like fire and doesn't always fill a room. Has anyone made anything similar to this? Help would be greatly appreciated (:
