Haven't been around -- how far along is C2?

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

I worked extensively with Construct Classic and was in the middle of my first huge project when C2 was announced. Needless to say, I was in a bit of quandary trying to decide whether or not to start over in the new program or keep working with the old one. My ultimate decision? Neither. I kinda just stopped working altogether.

So my question is, many months later, is C2 up to the functionality of Classic yet? Would I be better off sticking with Classic, jumping over to C2, or waiting even longer for C2 to catch up?

First part of your questions: No, C2 is still a bit behind CC.

Second part: Not easy to answer. It depends on your goals. For example, if you want to create an executable, there is no other way than CC, but if you want to make a browser game, you need to use C2.

Though scirra has said they want to make an EXE exporter. Also C2 means more stability, more export options, etc. I recommend you use C2, especially if it's a large project.Arima2011-09-26 19:01:04

Welcome back.
Although you are not strictly a beginner I advise you to read this tut/article that might help you make your mind.

To answer quickly your first question C2 isn't up to the functionality of Classic yet in the matter that it isn't as eye-candy, and less plugins/behaviors are available right now.
But you have to consider also C2 as a different tool than CC.
If you are aiming at a "tiny" browser game, C2 is already up for the task and might surprise you.
Just download the free version, check the "example" folder and browse the forum too.
There have been already many C2 examples/wips posted and you can already make full apps with it.

Well... In an unfortunate turn of events, it seems my decision was made for me. The new laptop I got during my hiatus has a GTX graphics card, which I'm just now learning causes massive problems with CC. That settles that, then; C2 it is.

EDIT: What exactly is the difference between the free version of C2 and the licensed ones? Are there sizable features missing from the free one?SullyTheStrange2011-09-27 09:48:24

Practically no features missing in the free one. However you are not allowed to make money off your games, you are limited to 100 events and you don't get as much free sprite packs / audio.

There are a few other limitations, but I am not sure...

And if you still want to make a desktop App from an HTML5 game made with C2, you can use Adobe Air. It should support HTML5, it supports jQuery, it supports AJAX, and it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux...
