I stayed up and watched all the results and speeches. Legendary stuff... history in the making!

Yep, same here. When they called Ohio for Obama everyone was saying how McCain would have a tough time catching up. I was still somewhat skeptical, but then they called New Mexico and I knew then that it was over. They still hadn't called Washington, Oregon, California, or Hawaii but really... they don't ever need to. If any of those states had gone red I would have eaten my own face.

Yeah but Barack only got 52% of the popular vote, which has me a little worried about how he's going to be received as President.

Thank God for the Electoral College.

The electoral college is, quite frankly, retarded. He would have won without it anyways, as you pointed out. :P

I don't think it's retarded. The Nazis arguably got in to power due to the proportional-representation system they had, based on the popular vote :P

I doubt the Nazis got into power through fair means, so I don't think that's a very good example. :P

Well, I was only making the point there's solid reasons why to use a first-past-the-post system.

Those reasons are only applicable when electing a government; the main advantage of a FPTP system is that it can create strong governments - as opposed to forcing coalitions to form. It's very silly and a flaw to elect simply a president based on a FPTP system, there's no advantage and it creates situations like the 2000 'scandal' where Gore won the popular vote.
