How do I dictate movement to an object in a grid based game?

Good examples would be fire emblem/advance wars.
What would an efficient way to clack on an object have it pop up its movement range on the grid and then you can tell it where to go. I know the big how two thread has a tile movement link in it but it didn't quite answer the questions I had.
Thanks for your time and hope to hear from you helpers soon!

Here you go there is a capx on page 2 I think. Very cool. On my todo list to implement myself in a few weeks.
You think you can do these things, but you can't, Nemo!
Just keep reading.
Just keep learning.

Nice reply! I'll start by making tile maps. Later on I may need help for telling units to move on the map.

Interesting. I'm getting the hang of using an array to set tile values. Is there way to make a certain kind of tile have the same value or do I have to input it all manually? Thanks again!
