How do I keep track of items using Local Storage?

Hi,
In my game I using an in-game currency using an item called gems. These gems can purchase in-game power-ups and new lives etc.

Anyways I found out how to keep track of a high score using local storage but am really struggling with keeping track of gems. Here are some screenshots of what I've done so far. Please help.
