How do I make a good top-down water effect?

I'd like to make a boat racing game viewed from above and was wondering if anyone has any tips for making nice-looking top-down water. In particular, I'd like the boats to leave wakes and affect the water as they move.

All advice greatly appreciated!

One way could be to create ring sprites at the boat that grow and fade to transparent.

you may need to use a water webgl effect on the water layer, then on top of it have waves layer using alpha threeshold for waves making them popin out in size and fade :) may work, dident tested but i will try something this week :)
