How Testbird provided testing for DeNA to enter into Chinese

  • August 17, 2015 – Chengdu, China – When you release one of the most anticipated games of the year on mobile devices in China, a game company worries a lot about if the game will work on the amount of devices available in the country. With more than 17 smartphone makers in the world and hundreds of different mobile phone and tablet models being sold in China, it could be difficult for any company to make decisions on what they should do to make sure everything works at release.

    DeNA, one of the biggest mobile game makers in Japan was faced with this problem. DeNA In conjunction with Namco-Bandai games in Japan were in charge of one of the biggest comic book IP in Japanese history, One Piece.

    One Piece is the story of a young boy with special powers who travels the ocean with his pirate crew trying to become the Pirate King. It’s known as the top selling manga in the country selling over 320 million volumes of manga all over the world. It had become a big hit in Asia and had a big following in China.

    The mobile game “Hanghaiwang Qihang” (available for Android and iOS) is the first official mobile release of the One Piece franchise in China and DeNA knew they would have many new users playing it on multiple devices. Their was a fear that the time to do the functional testing of every popular phone and tablet in China would push them behind their release date and would push up their budget costs. This was when they asked TestBird for help.

Within 24 hours, Testbird was able to find a critical issue within the game that would have lost the company thousands of players. Their was an issue with players whose phones used the Intel Atom processor. The phones would install the game but were never able to start the game.

    Because of the reporting and supplemental material in the report provided by TestBird, DeNA was able to solve the problem quickly and in return saw an 80% retention rate for the game and a DAU of over 8 million. DeNA QA Test Manager Luo Zhongming thanked TestBird for their quick reporting and the quality reporting that came from the accurate screenshots used during testing and the ease of repeatability when testing for the issue.
