I had downloaded it around 5 months ago but only recently started using crosswalk. I was wondering if it's necessary since it's all done in the cloud.

Your old version should still work fine, but it is highly recommended to update, since XDK is still not fully complete and it is constantly improving. So to take advantage of all the new fixes, features and the stability of the new version, I think you should update it.

It should have an improvement. How much I am not sure, but overall, because bugs are reduced and efficiency increased, it will work better and faster.

as my experience new update has fixed many bugs that were in old version. latest XDK have good performances with both crosswalk and android export. So better to update.
