  • Hi to everyone!

I would like to know if there is someone who can earn enough money to live only by making games?

  • There are millions of people living from working in the games industry.

  • I looked into this for Andriod/iOS development and I don't want to say no - but I really think there are easier ways to make a living. Also had a friend who release a half-way decent game using Swift (iOS) and it bombed. I think the stats are basically only 2 of every 10 App Store games makes profit. Salary wise it works out to for every developer 8 of ten don't make a poverty line income. 1 of ten will survive (say 50k USD per annum) and the other 1 is a large firm (Supercell, for ex.)

That of course is for mobile development, but it goes to show that the people making the big bucks are the established firms, not the small guys. In addition, anyone making money is making money because they have already release 3+ decent titles. Reputation is everything in mobile dev. Now again, this is mobile dev, not general game dev. But the lesson seems to be, go work for a big company (and then may be then, strike out on your own) or go be these guys.

  • I've managed for 8 years making Flash games. I'm ready to start trying to do the same with HTML5 or anything else that comes along shortly...

It's definitely not the easiest way to make money, but the thing about designing and programming games is that it doesn't get boring like most office jobs after a year or so.

  • Yes it is possible. There's millions worldwide making games daily for a living to keep their roofs over their heads.

  • If you want to find out if you can make it, keep your day job and make games as a part time job at home. ( Set some regular hours for this just like a job.)

Make and publish some games. When the money comes or doesn't, you will have your answer.

Good luck and don't give up. Stick with it. There are kids making money at this. You can do it if you stay with it.

  • Similar to other creative or art-type jobs, it's equally possible to become incredibly well off from your works, or to become a "starving artist". It depends on factors like economy (the amount people are willing to spend on your art/game), target audience of your product (and how well you cater to them), word-of-mouth and publicity of your works, and many other things that all have varying effects on your income.

The easiest way *not* to make a living off of games is not trying to make them.

  • It's possible with hard work and dedication. Look at my income report.

About two months now. All of my custom work clients come from Flippa. When they see that I build app reskins, they want to outsource to make a brand new fresh app for them. There've been times where I had to deny new requests because I was focused on finishing another client's app.

All C2 related freelancing because these clients come from Flippa and them just randomly ask me to make a fresh app for them. I'll give you a tip, these guys love addons such as Chartboost, iAP purchases, etc.

maybe I'll try flippa next, after this freelancing project I'm doing
