  • kill the free version if you intend to

    1.- continue improving C2 and

2.- make a living out of it.

    3.- be profitable

    4.- avoid C2 going abandonware.

Already there are lots of requests, like adding a stroke to text since long ago that have gone unsolved, and only by having more income will allow you to fully focus and make a better C2.

tl,dr: kill free version, focus on C2.

  • I have to disagree. Without a free version I would of never even considered the software. Having worked in the industry professionally for the better part of a decade being able to quickly evaluate a software without licensing hassles is a huge factor for me. The free version allows for this to happen.

Running a project on an indie budget means that it is essential for your software to be powerful and very cheap, and the licensing options available for C2 definitely allow for this. I can prototype for free, I can then buy a personal license, and then if my project does well enough I can PAY THE DIFFERENCE and upgrade to the Business license. In my opinion it's an ideal step based licensing plan for any serious indie developer. Would I pay more? Yes, yes I would...but not without having seen what C2 is capable of for free.

Having a free version also allows the tool set to be used in education environments easily which will then lead to a wider use of the software on a professional level at later dates when those students enter into the studio environment.

  • wow

  • If there had been no free version I would never have bothered with trying the software honestly. And now, come my first March payday I intend to purchase the full verison. I already created a game that hit the 100 event limit in the free version and I would love to make it better (Escape from Omega Base)

But I need the full version to do that.

I already saw how having families, and no event cap will allow me to do the things I want.

So yea, killing the free version would be a terrible idea.

  • Wouldn't have made the purchase if it was free.

  • Free version is why I purchased too. The current system is perfect IMO, families and more events become necessary once you're already hooked.

  • I don't think the free version takes up a lot of development time anyway. It's the same as the full version with certain features locked out, that's not incredibly difficult to program (I imagine).

  • Without free version becomes impopular and i don't trust scirra, that's why

  • wowExactly my words.

You know Sogen, there is a reason why demos, free versions and even free to play games exist.

  • I highly disagree.

Construct2 for its regular updates is not even fitting for a 30 day trial.

Ppl should be free to try the product out and know what they are paying for first.

Scirra wont in no way get higher earnings from killing a limited free version that you cannot use for commercial project because you need more than 100 events to make a game.

You should make a detailed explanation of why you think "killing" the free version is a good idea and how is that improving the selling.

What would boost the selling in my opinion is making quality games with construct2 and get positive reviews by big companies or big web gaming communityes.

Indie communities would be a good start to publish reviews because that kind of comunity contains all kind of game developers and game lovers

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

I personally found out about Construct2 via the Reddit GameDev community, along with the Construct2 Subreddit.

  • Free users are not customers

  • No, but they will be, hence the phrase "the first taste is always free".

  • Free users are not customers

But the majority of customers started as Free users. Getting rid of the chicken, also gets rid of the eggs...

  • The free version has enough limitations that you quickly realise you need the full version. Without the free version I would not have tried C2. As it is I have a business licence and it the best value for money I have gotten out of a purchase in quite a while.
