There is no limit.
You will run into rounding errors at some point however.

One of my layouts 82000 px wide, and every thing is going great.

Are there many uses for such huge layouts, just really big maps? :) In a small game I did I have 1 layout that includes game screen, title screen and instructions screens, and I 'scroll to' different areas. But I only tried that as an experiment and it has its drawbacks.

Well I would use unbounded scrolling for really big maps and would't set the actual layout size anything insane but, for some kind of procedural world generation and dynamic loading that could be useful. Similar to Minecraft.

As mentioned above, it's pretty much infinite. Not that you should need any insanely large layouts though as it may take certain users longer to render objects. I use a layout of 4000x4000, because I'm creating a galaxy the player can traverse. Each 4000x4000 layout is a sector to explore and linked via jump gates of worm holes. Since I'm representing a galaxy, the sectors need to feel quite large and this works well with smaller ship sizes.
