My Cocoon IO feedback (vs IntelXDK).

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

Post » Fri Jun 10, 2016 1:30 pm

I tried out Cocoon.io, but the main reason I'm gonna go with XDK, is probably because i can build for iOS, Android, AND Windows 10 apps. It's just convenient, and I havn't really noticed any major difference in performance.

You can take my word for that as @Zebbi wrote above. Cocoon gives better performance, faster build'n'test possibilities, flow of UX is very smooth and your app is going to be 20 mb lighter than Crosswalk-build. There are just three things to note:

1. Cocoon does not support "Letterbox Scale" full screen mode, so you got to think about that
2. Cocoon does not support Web Fonts, so you either got to stick with standard fonts (ugly) or use Sprite Fonts. Not a big deal, but can be a pain in the ass if you need to change the color of the text or already used fonts in your build.
3. Cocoon puts a lot of permission requirements on the app, depending on the services and plugins you are using, @Zebbi can share his experience with that. The more permissions you ask from your users, the less likely they will install your app.

Proof can be found in my signature, and If you need any help, please let me know.

Happy Building!

RIght now, it's the permissions that's my issue, here's a thread on it, would be handy if anyone else wants to throw their input in there to twist the devs arms: https://forums.cocoon.io/t/remove-ident ... ons/2940/3

Just a shame the devs barely show up for support

I don't think you need to worry about Windows apps anymore? Isn't that a bit of a sinking ship?

@Zebbi ,

It is a sinking ship, but it actually brings slightly more revenue than Android or iOS, due to a low competition in the market (not my words, read in a research paper). So if your game is really good, well, Windows Phone is a place to go.

@Zebbi Sinking ship? Are you kidding? It's universal apps that will work on windows 10PC's and Xbox One as well. Yes, phone might not have many users, and less apps, but it's kind of good compared to all the shovelware on iOS and android.

I'm the same opinion as @tunepunk
Once Windows 10 is running on every system (XBox, tablets, phones and so on) it becomes a huge market.
And maybe Ludei is planning to add a Windows Exporter as well, who knows ;)

Up to now I have made the best experiences with iOS in account of revenue. I'll add Windows to my list, once Ludei supports it ;)
Maybe steam will be available as well (they asked it in their survey)

We will see :)

@AndreasR Android and Apple are going the same direction. Android opening up for Chromebook, Apple planning to have iOS apps run on Macs. Microsoft is miles ahead in terms of forward thinking on this issue, the only problem is they don't execute/market it well enough. But i would prefer if the Construct export just bundled itt all for u, skipping the annoying middle step. For me XDK, Visual Studio, Cocoon.io and all the other wrappers are just an annoyance and a hassle.

I apologise, I'm not a Windows 10 user so I was just going on their phone situation, didn't realize how important apps were to desktop/console users. Oddly enough, I was trying to see what the easiest option myself would be, and it looks like using cocoon.io for Android/iOS and XDK/Visual Studio for Windows seems the best compromise?

The real question is this, would you play a game if it asked for Identity, Contact and WiFi permissions? Now, I'm not a MASSIVE app player/user, so I just tend to click yes to whatever, but here's my cocoon.io compiled app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... bbi.srduke - start installing that, and you tell me if the permissions bother you or not (you don't have to finish installing, just let me know how you feel about the permissions).

visual studio is not a wrapper. it's a development tool. C#, C++ and more. But also extensible and can build cordova apps in js/html, including c2 games.
