Is there a way to organize the items in the Object list into folders?

Yes, but only in the latest version 0.99.97.
You can add new folders from the 'objects' folder of the Project bar.

Here is a cap for a point of reference:

...Hm. I'm using the latest version, and I see the folder in the cap reference file you provided... but I don't see the option for creating new folders anywhere. Here's my Objects tab:

Look at the bottom right corner of the screen and click the project tab. From the object folder there you can add/remove object folders and move objects between them.
