OMG Mozilla BrowserQuest

  • HTML5 just got a big boost with Mozilla releasing BrowserQuest, which is a massively multiplayer game written in HTML5.

    http://browserquest.mozilla.org/

    What HTML5 does it use?

    Web Workers - initializing the world without you knowing it.

    Web Sockets - fast communication between client and server.

    Canvas - simple 2D graphics.

    HTML5 Audio - sound effects are necessary for a game.

    Local Storage - better than .ini files or cookies

    CSS3 Media Queries - resizing and adapt to different devices

    If anyone doubted HTML5, this is a better proof than any I've seen, even Angry Birds!

    Quiz: which of these technologies does Construct 2? Which will be coming down the pike? <img src="smileys/smiley2.gif" border="0" align="middle">

  • I've seen it yesterday, and it is awesome!

    ...and the coolest thing is that, with some effort you should be able to do something like that with C2!

  • To quote an obviously handsome and intelligent man on another post:

    "I just played it, and am posting this, on a (borrowed) iPad. The browser really is the OS now, most of us just havent quite caught up yet."

  • Yea, it's definitely awesome

    A nice concept of what can be done in HTML5

    Do sounds actually work for you guys? On my system, and with Firefox 11, the game's muted. I did finish it, though, and it's very well done. Love all the pop culture references! :)

  • I could not play it at the office yesterday due to some policy restrictions, just tried it this morning and it was lovely. I'm pretty sure there's more to HTML5 than meets the eye.

    Oddly enough, I couldn't get sound out of any of the combinations of browser and platform. There's a sound on/off button at the lower right, but it doesn't seem to work either way.

    Anyone having any luck with sound?

    I'm fascinated that Mozilla's giving away the source code for this as well!

  • And in a related development, Adobe announced that they're going to charge developers who use Flash 9% of their app revenue if their app sells more than $50,000.

    http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74741.html

    Flash really is dead! <img src="smileys/smiley4.gif" border="0" align="middle">

  • Just sifted a bit through the files, and there are sound files -- so that explains we didn't get any audio. <img src="smileys/smiley4.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • I tried to see if this would run in IE10 on Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but I couldn't even enter a name on the loading screen. This is a bit puzzling because IE10 does support Web Workers, Web Sockets, Canvas, etc.

    I fiddled with the F12 Developer Tools and got this message:

    <img src="http://thulfram.coffeecup.com/HBGames/Random/IE10.PNG" border="0" />

    In keeping with the spirit of the game, they should have displayed this:

    <img src="http://thulfram.coffeecup.com/HBGames/Random/mario.jpg" border="0" />

  • Internet Explorer sucks, Microsoft won't listen our needs

  • They should make a fully fledged mmo out of this

    I'd pay to play that!

  • Try Construct 3

    Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

    Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • In Statcounter, it shows that IE still takes 35.75% users of the world.

    Asia even worse, IE takes 76.89% in China, 64..46% in Taiwan,

    the most advanced country is Japan, still 54.36%.

    In these 2~3 years, can you make a decision to spend millions of money to make/maintain a mmo, and prepare to tell your investors: "Hey, guess what? more than 40% users can't see our game!!" ?

    As for Flash, mmo was an already done game genre. You can check this old famous game:

    By far, HTML5 is just showing it can do something Flash can do in some experimental ways;

    however, the chance of future will never on PC anymore. The real value of Mozilla's BrowserQuest is that it can be played both on PC and none-flash Mobile.

    That's why AIR 3.2 so scary! It will take the superiority of HTML5 away!

    I know I am not an optimist, but maybe one day we'll cry and beg an AIR exporter soon.

    Frankly, if I can make 50,000 USD, I won't care it's 9% or 30% fee.

  • Good topic, exciting development, but this is surely misplaced in the 'Construct 2 general' area - and duplicates this thread which is in the 'Open Topic' area. Discussion best continued there?
