  • Any plans on OpenGL renderer on construct?

IMHO Construct is an awesome app. Probably the Game Maker killer.

but i think it's weird to have an open-source project but uses proprietary graphics lib only (DirectX, latest version). Just wondering why wouldn't use OpenGL in the first place.

Cross-platform is important in open-source projects nowadays.

It's not that DirectX sucks, but i would like to see construct ported to many platforms. We may say that just use that WINE thingy, but this doesn't really solves everything.

Hope with OpenGL rendering, Construct comes to Mac and Linux, and possibly iPhone.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • Please use search -.- its been suggested many times and FYI construct was started by guys who were newbies at the time now they've learned a lot and Construct 2 which is soon started or started already is going to have OpenGL

  • lol didnt find anything with search. thats why i started a thread.

    yay

Weird thinking open-source means "opengl only".

Whats wrong with latest DirectX version? its not decreasing performance, rather enchancing visuals.

With open-source someone can change it into opengl .

  • Sorry. Don't get me wrong.

Weird thinking open-source means "opengl only".

If there are two or three renderers: OpenGL, DirectX, software renderer, its fine. Like Irrlicht and Ogre, etc. did.

Some compatibility issues, you know. We want make games playable by everyone.

I know but its a lot of work. Changing EVERY DirectX calls to OpenGL by yourself is too much.

  • There are a couple of factors to think about here - like DirectX 9 is shipping built-in to Vista and 7, making games for XBox would require DirectX, etc... but there's no reason Construct 2 couldn't have both an OpenGL and DirectX renderer.

  • I think the best solution is two renderers, DirectX and OpenGL. DirectX is much more compatible with Windows than OpenGL (that's why some graphic cards have problems with OpenGL). Instead, OpenGL is much more compatible with Mac OS and Linux, also iPhone uses a reduced version of OpenGL so it can theorycally be imported for iPhone too (Maybe 3 renderers?).

  • actually its not compatibility, most low-end graphics manufacturers jus dont bother with OpenGL drivers or they half-ass them.

Same manufacturers that only have drivers for windows.
