Optional editor icon colors?

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

I likes the new ones better too. They do look professional, and it's kind of refreshing after all those eye-hurting colors. If you like the old ones enough to go "the extra mile" a bit, you can download r82, copy the old icons to some folder, install r83 and overwrite the icons with the old ones. It's my understanding that this should work. You could make a .bat file to quickly copy those after each update.

Cheers!
...I personally find it kind of ugly and washed-out, and everything looks unclickable. Surely I can't be the only one who thinks this o.o

Would it be possible to just make the monochrome icons optional?
Just to clarify that I'm Paulo, I'm designing the icons.

I agree with you that is a little hard to distinguish the inactive icons from the active ones. When I saw the new release I perceived that the inactive icons are not different enough, so they need to be a bit more transparent. That's something that probably will be fixed in the next releases. Despite the mockups I made, this is the first time I'm seeing the icons applied to the interface too. So there's still some tweaks that needs to be made.

Regarding grayscale icons being ugly that's very subjective. Everyone have a different opinion on what beauty is, so it's impossible to please all. However if a considerable amount of users find it unpleasant we will definitely take measures to change it once we have the required resources available.

I also made a skin proposal to go along with the new icons, but Ashley pointed me that there's a lot of technical difficulties that would make it extremely time consuming to implement it right now. So it will be postponed to a future time.

I also proposed to put all the icons in a single strip to make it easy to manage and accommodate future changes. It would save lots of time for me not having to export hundreds of images, and for Ashley not having to import hundreds of them. Again, there's technical difficulties that make it hard (if not impossible) to implement such features. The scenario in the background is not as close to the ideal as we would like it to be. I guess this would also be the base to enable the user to customize the icons. I can't speak for Ashley, but I guess it's not viable right now.Animmaniac2012-03-25 21:40:12

Thanks for the input, and for the new icons

Now the next step is for @Ashley to do something about the colors of the tabs. This is what my setup looks like for the current game. I have the tabs opened all the time, I didn't open them just now on purpose, just to take the screenshot - it's the real thing.

If anything, the colors make it MORE DIFFICULT to read the tabs . No comments on the aestethics (is that the correct spelling? probably not ) of it.

I would suggest either two colors (one for event sheets and another for layouts), or just one color, but show a small icon on the tab (layout or event sheet) so I don't have to add an E or L at the end of each event sheet or layout

That said, remember that I'm only trying to help make this product better

Thanks!Geo2012-03-25 22:25:30

@Animmaniac is right about the technical difficulties, right now without spending too much time on cosmetics we basically have to stick to one icon set and one of the currently selectable themes (of which Windows 7 is the only one I think looks remotely good, but the others are provided since our UI library makes it easy to choose between that selection).

@Geo - I thought the multicolor tabs was a nice touch, because if for example you want to select the "LevelWonE" tab you can just look for the yellow one, rather than having to read a bunch of grey tabs. On the other hand, perhaps it would be clearer to have just two colors, one for layouts and another for event sheets? I'm open to suggestion on UI changes, it's just generally only small things like tab colours are practical to change, without spending loads of time designing a themeing system.Ashley2012-03-25 22:56:50

I also has some UI suggestion:

1. Please put the project PATH (or at least Project filename) to the windows title, for example :
For single capx file: C:\Dropbox\Scirra\MyProject\SexyAnimeGirlPlatformer.capx
For Project folder: C:\Dropbox\MyProject\Scirra\SpaceClown.caproj

When we switch between layout / event, it should automatically update the title respective to the project,
This will make it easier especially when you have multiple project open at the same time.

2. One project should share one color, this will make it easier to distinguish multiple project opened at the same time.

3. I agree with 2 color suggestion for Layout & Event instead of multiple color like right now.
For example, we have 3 Project open at the same time:
Project 1: Red
Project 1 Layout: Light Red
Project 1 Event Sheet: Slightly darker Red
(or a different saturation of red, basically it should keep the hue to distinguished it from another project)

Project 2: Blue
Project 1 Layout: Light Blue
Project 1 Layout: Darker Blue

Project 3: Green
Project 1 Layout: Light Green
Project 1 Layout: Darker Green

Or this is optional and if we want to be fancy: user can choose their own project color and save it with the project,
in case they don't like the random color assigned to the project.

Thanks @Ashley for the feedback, The thing is, I have many tabs opened and remembering colors for them would require extra effort, I don't think anybody looks for tabs by the color. Then I happen to close one (accidentally or because I don't need it for a long time), and it changes color - but as I said, I'm not bothered about it changing color because I don't look at colors anyway. I just think so many colors don't look good

Regarding Potato's suggestion, #1 yes would be nice, #2 and #3 I'm not sure, I think I prefer to have the same color for all projects, as long as event sheets and layouts have different color tabs (or some icon).

Another small suggestion while I'm at it, I think it would be nice to have "numbers" or something assigned to open windows / tabs, and to be able to switch to them using hotkeys, e.g. Alt+1 would switch to first tab, Alt+2 to the second etc. And the fact that we can reorder them, as we can today, would make this useful even if we accidentally close tabs.

@Potato, you can see the full path by hovering the mouse over a tab. I think that's better than clogging up the title bar with possibly long file paths...

I have to agree with Potato and Geo's suggestions.
I like the idea of a set of colors per project, with a difference between layouts/event sheets so in a blink you make the difference.

I also understand what tokinsom was saying at first and what animmaniac noted too: there's some lack of contrast between the enabled and disabled black ribbons/menu icons.

I used, in a blink, to know if a project needed to be saved or not before.
Now, it's less readable in an instant, it needs "identification".
But as animmaniac notified it, I'm confident he will fix the issue in the next releases, thanks in advance for that.

I use semi transparent window borders thanks to aero, and the black icons don't contrast that much over the blurry background, maybe tokinsom is "suffering" from that too.
I also get the impression that "black is a bit sad" or I don't know how to word it exactly.
As tokin mentioned, the UI used to be "shiny colors", the passage to black gradient makes it more "sanitized".

Don't get me wrong, it's not a big deal to me (apart from the save icon issue I mentionned earlier) but it's the feeling I'm getting from the new UI. I'm not telling it's bad work, it's different.
I still need to get used to the new objects/behaviors icons too (to spot them as Intrepid said in his post, I was quite used to the former representations).
Also a lot of plugin makers will have to redo their icons, to match the new color/symbol code.
As of now, built-in and custom are visualy struggling in the dialogs ^^

I like the multi-coloured tabs and find it makes it easier and faster to find what I'm looking for. Only having two colours would cause more "where was this again ..." scanning of the bar of the tabs. Perhaps this could be an option, so people can pick the approach they like better?
