  • Ever since there was news that C2 would go commercial, some people were unhappy with it because the main attraction in C1 was that it was free to use. So here's a list of some unknown gamer makers which are still in active development.

    Note to Scirra:

I am sorry, but if you think this post could drive away some potential customers then you can delete this thread. I would have no objection.

I am not completely unhappy that you are going commercial with this project since even part time development was hard because you were going to pass out of college soon and handling something like this with a full time job would be impossible. So good luck with C2 guys!

    So here's the list-

  • Hi Abhilash,

No this thread is fine, we are always interesting on seeing what other technology is out there, but I changed the thread title to be less aggressive (I know it wasn't meant that way but it could be interpreted so).

    Tom

  • I think our main contenders - all of which you missed! - are Game Maker, GameSalad, Multimedia Fusion, Unity3D and possibly Stencyl. I don't mind discussion of alternatives as long as it's not bashing or trolling. I also think Construct is (and C2 will be) the best out there, so I'm not afraid everyone's going to disappear just because they find out about an alternative!

I'd guess most people are on this forum because they already prefer Construct. So perhaps you could rephrase the post - instead of just a list of alternatives, how about something like a comparison to Construct, or something along those lines which might be more relevant to users of this forum?

  • isnt unity in another category? isnt construct for now mainly for 2d and strategy games?

GM, MMF2, GameSalad, Unity3D and Stencyl are not listed here because earlier the the title of this thread was "UNKNOWN alternatives" before Tom changed it.

I haven't tried many of them except BennuGD, Novashell, and SmallBasic and all of these sure look promising though.

BennuGD is cross platform and runs on many platforms including linux, mac, GP2X wiz, Haiku, Dingoo and Wii.

  • I see. But aren't the least-known alternatives most likely to be incomplete or unsupported?

  • Ever since there was news that C2 would go commercial, some people were unhappy with it because the main attraction in C1 was that it was free to use.

Just want to point out that C2 is planned to have 2 free versions, one with a nag screen and delayed features, the other the latest version for beta testing purposes that works for 42 days, both usable as long as you don't make money from the games made with it. I think a lot of people have missed this information.

  • ughh this is horrible, dont you realise the outlash you going to have from the public considering a version with "delayed features"? this is like making fun on people -_-

  • going commercial dosnt have to get bloody. cant you just put a low price and everyone will buy it and be happy.

going the way that mmf2 did is a sure failiure, they spend all their time trying to make their versions uncrackable and even harrassing pirates, when they should be focusing on program features and battling the competition.

every person thats talented enough to MAKE A COMMERCIAL GAME isnt going to have a problem paying for your program as long as its like 20$

I disagree. Game maker's free version NEVER gets the pro version's features, so it's better than that, and MMF has no free version at all. It's not even remotely close to horrible. Seriously, what do you want for free?? There already is a free version with all the latest features!

Scirra has said they're not going to use DRM, so they're not going the same path as clickteam.

I think we need a 'free versions' thread.

  • These tools are not known much simply because they don't have that much of hype around them and the devs aren't very keen in advertising their hobby project, also another reason maybe is that they don't have any good games to show off.

Most of these softwares are incomplete and are still in development but that doesn't mean that these are bad, even Construct 0.9.x is/was still in development and was still very good.

And I can't understand what do you mean by 'Unsupported' here, do you mean that these softwares are not supported by many platforms?(I listed the exports possible in Bennu) or do you mean that these tools don't have enough documentation? Novashell, Bennu, Processing, SmallBasic, GameDevelop have some decent docs.

Oh, and I noticed just now that BennuGD website is down for some reason.

EDIT: This was in reply to Ashley. Arima and karshinkoff posted while I was writing the reply.

  • i dont have a problem with buying construct, im just concerned to not go the same road as mmf and want percentages of the games, and get greedy with the drm and all that, it will quickly ruin the image of scirra.

but if its so then allright

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • They've said that they're not going the royalties route either, so no need to worry about that.
