Oversized "AppData" Cache?

• So yeah, I was using a piece of software that sort of scans the computer to help figure out what to delete to gain disk space, and the program locked-up on a folder in the AppData folder that is titled after my Construct 2 project. The folder that is being very strange is "Cache". I've attempted to delete this Cache folder and Windows is just forever loading instead of deleting the folder (been waiting 20 mins now). Was just curious about what this actually is? I can safely assume it's the cache for when I preview my game on C2, but I don't understand what's going on or why this has happened

P.S. My project is only 30mb big.

• Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
• App Data Local is not only where to store caches, it involves other softwares such as Minecraft, Project Files, tools, etc.

• Oh I just realised the screenshot isn't really clear :P

The "Properties" dialog is the properties of just the project folder in "AppData".

• Are you using Chrome? It probably depends on the browser settings - some browsers for example will use a certain percentage of your overall disk space as cache. You might also want to delete things from inside the browser settings as well, since randomly deleting files could break the browser...

• Oops, I ended up using CMD rather than the browser settings to delete the Cache folder and left it for about 6 hours and it completed! The most strangest part of this, is that it seems to have given me 20gb or more disk space all of a sudden (I HAVE only deleted that particular Cache folder. Very weird!) I am using Chrome, and I couldn't find much to do with Cache options :O (Looking at previous projects that I used to playtest a LOT, the cache only reaches up to 10mb or so, and have waaay less than 900,000 files in cache lol) Weird times.

• I just want to alert this, but this is still happening to me, and I started a new project and it's happening to it aswell, thousands of small 1kb files that add up to be massive!

I have 100% used Node-Webkit since I started this new project, no other browsers.

Does this happen to anyone else?

If you are reading this and you commonly use Node-Webkit to preview, I'd be interested to know what happens to you! Simply go to:

C:\Users[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Local[YOURPROJECTNAME]

And once in here, right click your "Cache" folder and click Properties, report back with how many files you have!

• Jase00,I was wondering where my space was going and found 1,585,344 Files

• Not happening to me, Windows XP, no folders named after my projects, Construct/Scirra folder is empty.

• Is this happening because a single project is getting thousands of files in its cache, or because you keep previewing with different projects and that builds it up? Does it only happen in preview mode as well?

• Katala , Haha you beat the high score, I only had 900,000 files at most! Glad I could be of use :P

, I assume you went into the correct AppData folder, though I believe this file overload thing is only if you preview with Node-Webkit a lot. Perhaps you're using another browser :P The "Project Name" folder like in my first posts screenshot has the "Local Storage" folder, so if you didn't have this cache folder, you're Local Storage data in Node-Webkit wouldn't exist :P

Ashley I'll try to be as thorough as possible :)

It's when I'm previewing a single project multiple times, literally every time I hit the Preview button, it's creating files that won't get deleted. I'm currently looking into when it happens, and I've come to the conclusion that this all only happens when you're previewing a .caproj (NOT a .capx). I've explored my appdata folder, I can find only projects that are .caproj (I don't see any folders for the times I previewed bug tests and whatnot)

And GOOD NEWS! Projects exported in Node-Webkit don't even create a "Cache" folder at all it appears! (Other files appeared in the appdata/projectname folder, such as a file called "lockfile", but nothing about the dreaded cache folder)

Further investigation just to see how bad the damage is, is that upon previewing my game (which is a pretty busy game, but only "Approx.Download: 6.9mb, memory use: 14.2mb), the Cache folder will generate 2,063 files at startup, and will increase as other things load dynamically like sounds. It's got to 4,193 files from one single preview.

Now here's where I my research becomes useless- I close the Node-Webkit preview, and the files remain there, and upon previewing again, it will randomly either reset back to 2,063 files, or it will continue adding on and get up to 8,000 files (and further). I don't really know what else to analyse after this lol.

Hope this was of use!

• OK, I've put a fix in to the next release (which is a stable update, but hopefully it doesn't break anything...) - I could reproduce a file leak and after the fix of clearCache() on startup it seems to be stable and not continually increasing.

• Huzzah!

• I also think this was the issue I had after computer start the first preview could took something like 5-10 minutes. Also I am using CAPX and not CAPROJ.
