  • Reading through many of the posts and threads here today gives more more of a warm fuzzy feeling than coming here yesterday. Maybe some are still a bit sceptical, it's natural, but I don't feel that heavy negative vibe as before. Some people, even though they don't like subscriptions or web based will still be supporting the continued development regardless. I don't know if it has something to do with the latest blog post or certain very negative people no longer has access to the forum.

As you guys seem to be in a bit of crunch-mode right now, and I'm quite amazed how your small team can manage all the bug fixing AND answering questions etc here on the forums. I'm curious how much coffee/or energy drings are being consumed at the office lately! Haha

I would probably be hooked up to one of these, filled with espresso.

Any way... Keep up the good work Scirra team, I'm curious to see how C3 develops...

    +1

The atmosphere is back to normal and it feels like the community back together finally.

  • Yes, it's noticeably nicer round here and I think my blood pressure has dropped considerably since the other day!

One very kind user sent us a hamper full of sweets, so at the moment we're all running on sugar

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • It does feel better, maybe a combination of things. That last blog post certainly helped I think. And maybe some of us got some stuff off our chests in the megathreads that have been happening the past couple of days, but also saw things from different perspectives. Anyway I think the future is looking a bit brighter.

  • Yeah, it feels a lot better now after the latest blog post. I was a bit skeptical after reading the blog posts every week.

I am definitely subscribing day one now, because I want to support your effort and also because I can see a future in your product. Hopefully performance will get better on mobile after the engine upgrade until then please make the ad integration as smooth as possible so we can use it with our professional projects.

Also, I believe you lost lots of people during the blog posts and the "forum drama". I would recommend you to find interesting ways to promote your latest blog post. I think many people that decided not to subscribe might reconsider

Wish you the best and keep us updated!

  • I agree. Finally, the forums are a pleasant place again.

  • It only takes one loud active loud voice to turn the mood sour. Especially because more level headed posters generally won't even bother to respond (don't feed the trolls) until they really can't take it anymore. Responding at all will usually escalate the frustration anyways - it is fantastically difficult to change a person's views and opinions with words even in person, much less over the internet. It also takes a lot more effort to post constructive criticism as opposed to ranting.

It is my hope that all the "X other software does better for free" people will actually eventually go and join those communities rather than hang around here and make demands from free software. Example of Scirra actually being too generous with their free version in my (unpopular) opinion. Vast majority of users looking for free software (students, low/no income - I was definitely there at one point in life) are attracted, then feel empowered and entitled for more free stuff, even though the original intent was that Construct is paid software.

It is a strategy that IS workable in my opinion - I was attracted to the free version and then eventually bought the software on sale even though I didn't actually need the full functionality. It is just requires a delicate balance and more effort dealing with the disgruntled masses this type of strategy attracts.

I tried my best to ignore "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" ... I really did. It wasn't until he private messaged me calling me a cheerleader for Scirra, a guy who runs interference for Ashley, and a lapdog for the company that I couldn't ignore it anymore. So I purposely engaged every one of his threads. I'm not afraid to admit it.

These parts 'round here, they're not so bad anymore. A bit sunnier, a bit more teal shows through the clouds. I can dwell in this land.

  • Not surprising. I've been in a fair share of situations in my life where I'm in a group just having fun over drinks but one party pooper manages to contribute some of their negativity to the group and it contaminates the whole atmosphere.

  • Look, I think some of the comments are justified. Not everything is rosy. The way some people have gone about making their concerns known does come across as overly aggressive though. It also doesn't help the feeling of ..."hey we are all here to get the best from Construct 3"

So I think the energy is just not focused correctly. - from both sides sometimes actually.

The fact that Ashley's blog posted some stuff we really wanted to see. i.e the Performance enhancements etc. doesn't mean it's going to magically get fixed overnight but at least, for me at least, there is a positive future in committing to Construct 3.

In other words, I start making a game now, run into performance issues etc. but hey...at least down the line somewhere, sometime, there is help coming.

The rudimentary 3D mentioned is really a good thing so maybe we can expect some normal maps for sprites, some lighting effects and so on.

Construct performance is always brought up when compared to other engines.

Maybe an update to this post when C3 is out will also set some expectations.

    https://www.scirra.com/blog/ashley/28/t ... ve-engines

It's maybe important to note the difference between Comparing HTML5 performance for the sake of it being HTML5.

Realistically people want to see the performance of C3 running on a desktop or Android tablet for instance against a native compiled app. i.e If I want to make a game and run it on Steam or Wii U or whatever compared to another compiled native engine.

The press about The Next Penelope having had to get people to re-write the game in C++ for Wii U doesn't help either.

I feel that maybe that would give a better perspective and put people's minds at ease when evaluating C3 if a nice comparison can be done again. I know I'm worried about that...although i have not seen any evidence that i need to worry too much (At least on Desktop)

    This part ...

" On the other hand in Construct 2 everything from WebGL shaders to your favourite third-party plugin will work everywhere from iOS to Xbox One."

I think this is an important point to highlight - I would..esp since now charging $99 per year. It provides some explanation as to "Why should I pay $99 a year vs X engine"

I think the C3 "PR" was not handled very well...but it's ok. Seems it's being corrected.

It's amazing what a little more information released to the community can do, rather than having a attitude that, on the surface, feels like "screw you,we dont have to tell you anything, we are steaming ahead come with or leave".

The new suggestion platform is also something good, if it gets taken seriously.

    https://construct3.ideas.aha.io/

    Things are looking up.

The funny thing...and I'm sure Ashley and Tom will probably have a bit of a chuckle at this.....I find the "in Browser experience of C3 Beta" quite different, in a good way. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes">

  • *sending some virtual positive vibes*

I must admit that I was too sceptical at first

(I still wont use the software at work, but I defenetly will use C3 for my out of work projects)

One very kind user sent us a hamper full of sweets, so at the moment we're all running on sugar

Tom, Ashley, I must apologize for being harsh, and if you will provide me an address, I will send you something nice too.

(not sweets because I care about your health and the package may travel a long time from Israel)

  • You haven't been harsh at all! I don't want people to feel they can't be critical - you can and that is often some of the most valuable feedback we can action.

Our address is on our contact page, gifts are always awesome but are completely not necessary! If you feel compelled to send us something, more postcards to stick on our postcard wall are always welcome!

  • I'll add some to the positivism

    Tom

A couple years ago I thought your presence here seemed rather useless (couldn't see your contribution to scirra).

Now I've been gone and out most of the last 18 months, but man, you've stepped up.

Nice forum presence and arranging a wildcards of things ... Nice work ^_^

P.s. add a new blog occasionally (personal interest ones)

  • I honestly don't understand how Scirra gets get any work done while being so active on the forums and actually responding to the Highly Emphatic Consumer crowd. I haven't been productive at all this past week at all >_>

On a side note, since there doesn't seem to be anywhere else proper to mention it, are you still going to do away with Scirra as a name? Seems strange to refer to the company as Construct, I can't do it. Or maybe the Construct Team. But Scirra still rolls off the tongue (keyboard?) easier.

From what I understand, Tom is the webmaster. So you definitely saw his contribution a lot!
