RPG Planning Tool(s)?

Discuss game development design and post your game ideas

What sorts of software do game designers use to plan out the game flow of their RPGs? Some sort of flowchart software seems like a given, but is there anything tailored specifically towards RPG game design?

All in all, what tools do you know of that are conducive to planning out a 10+ hour RPG?Dalal2013-09-08 16:37:37

For the story/sequence, yWriter seems good (but save and backup OFTEN - it's wonky)

For powers, characters, levels, and all your charts, Excel (or equivalent) should be great.

yWriter is a great suggestion! I could use this for planning out the overall story. Thanks!

Any other suggestions anyone has are also appreciated. Is there anything tailor-made for RPG planning?

I really hate to say it, but paper works great for me

There is a software called Articy draft which is designed for non-linear storytelling, and which should by know export everything in xml. It's a tightly packed solution, however its ergonomy isn't the greatest.

For more linear stories, a simple writing tool works pretty well. Celtx is a reference as far as scenario-writing is concerned, but Word, LibreOffice or any equivalent works just as well.

And based on what Chris said, I'd add that excel is great for anything you need to retrieve at runtime in your game : dialogs, cinematic elements, reading generated levels... it may seem weird but you can do a lot with it.

My favorite tools are A3 paper and bunch of colored pens. The latency between your thoughts and what you write is very low :)
