Semi-transparent sprites and mobile performance

Just a quick question - what kinds of experiences have you had when using semi-transparent sprites in mobile apps? Do they make mobile performance worse? Or is there little difference to completely opaque and transparent sprites?

On a related note, do you think around 40 objects being constantly created and destroyed is too many for most mobile platforms?
