Tiny update to the blog at http://pixelpopulation.weebly.com/sugar ... n-the-blog

Working on 2 games, Sugar High Shakedown and Revenja. More focus is going in to Sugar High as Revenja is a much bigger project. These are images and mock ups of Sugar High Shakedown. A lovely night time stroll in the park.

  • Story:

Mr. Candy Cane has been pushing high end sweets on the streets. This is causing all the kids to become extremely hyperactive, to the point the public is demanding Mayor Palinski to do something. With the Police Dept. using majority of their resources responding to calls trying to assist schools and homes containing the kids, it leaves Mayor Palinski no choice, but to call on drop out police cadet, Gil. Will his fists be sweet enough to sour Mr.Cand Cane?

  • I added several more images and mock ups. Love to get some feedback. I haven't posted the updated layout look of the Park level yet. Waiting on that.

I absolutely love the background story

The girlfriend LOVES candy, and the smile I see on her face when she just had a piece of quality cake is irreplaceable. However, she doesn't turn hyperactive, she only gives the expression that she is having the time of her life. Imagine if she were to get hold of Mr. Candy Cane's high end sweets?!

She would fall in love with the theme of this game straight away but she is no pro gamer. I would hope for a challenging game, but what level of skill is demanded to play your game? Would a Super Mario-only gamer be able to enjoy it without giving up too early? Perhaps, if the game would come with a two player co-op option, like with Double Dragon, me and the girlfriend could play it together. I know you promote that feature highly on your blog.

In my opinion, your blog is pretty good. Your "about" page and background story for your desire to create this game was an entertaining read.

If this game were to be complete and come out, I would most certainly be interested in making the purchase. Actually looking forward to telling my girlfriend about the them

  • Dreamcader thanks for the interest and taking the time to read it. Hope you enjoyed some of the images or few animations posted. I teach and see the effects of candy first hand. Though, this isn't a true crusade against Sugar, just a weird spin on the drug scene.

I hope to make it a gradual level of difficulty. I plan to add a few obstacles, but will try to not make them "Cheap" deaths similar to the original Double Dragon's level 4's popping out walls.

2 player is one of my ultimate goals, but I'm trying to focus on what I can handle now. If I can't pull it off initially, then maybe as an add on, but it's a definite want.

I just added a preview of another baddie and also did a cover mock up, which is my take on an old Kung fu movie poster. I posted them yesterday, along with a few other things.

How old are your pupils or students? Does this only affect young kids? Check this amusing article out on BBC.com

Yeah, can imagine all the hard work. Really hope your game with this particular theme will see the light. Girlfriend said she would play it 100%, mocking me that I would without doubt be one of the kids who would bonk classes if given the high end sweets

  • Dreamcader I have elementary students. There are several things that can trigger actions besides candy such as the lighting in the room, certain materials, lack of things to help stabilize their fidgeting, and even body sprays. The list goes on. Bottom line, they need structure. That is the best strategy. It helps with classroom management and push their potential a bit more.

  • Liked the first video preview.. Keep the good work.

  • nemezes Thanks. I just finished the art for 2 new characters, Lita and Shugar Roy Leon. I have to start nailing down the next levels and interactive objects.

  • This is the game that you had built upon from a template, right? How has the process of changing/adding things to the template been going? I'm looking into using a template in the future to create something like this as well.

  • YoHoho

It is being built from scratch using Construct. In Scirra's store there is a beat em up scrolling and platformer templates. I was going to use those, but Luckily I found a programmer who wanted to jump in on this. The developer of those store templates put in detailed notes of events with the event sheets.

I know if you create an invisible box and have your actual player's behavior pinned to it, it will help with collisions since the beat em ups are mainly collision actions (then again, you might already have known that).

  • Yes, I followed a beat 'em up tutorial (pretty much the only one) on YouTube and learned about the collision boxes from that. And that's pretty much all I've learned, LOL. As long as there are great details with events then I can usually figure out how things were done and change them from there. Thanks for the response.

Are you going to have the main character use of any of these tools to contain the kids? Would be interesting if you combine your own wisdom together with the game somehow, hehe.

Will you show us the artwork for Lita and Shugar Roy Leroy soon? Not sure if I spotted them on the homepage yet.

  • Dreamcader

I've updated http://pixelpopulation.weebly.com/sugar ... n-the-blog where you can view Lita.

I also updated the first page of this post with some gifs including Shutar Roy. Not sure if I will implement the strategies for containing kids in the game. Thank you for viewing.
