    Hello everyone!

I started working on this project almost three years ago and it's very dear to me. I gave up on it a lot of times in the past due to bad planning and being too ambitious. Worked on and off on this project, sometimes didn't work on it for months. But I always thought about it, kept it in the back of my head and kept on developing the idea because this is the game I really want to make and would love to play. Since I'm actively working on it again now, next to my fulltime job, I decided to start a devlog to keep myself motivated and to get some good critique. Also because doing everything alone can make you blind for the obvious.

I'm aware of the fact that there are a lot of good and bad (survival) horror games out there. This is why I really want to make a good one, even though this is gonna be a big challenge since the game is a 2d sidescroller and horror on it's own is a difficult genre.

That is why I've read a lot of articles about what makes something creepy, how we react when we are scared and how we get scared. I find this very interesting stuff to research.

Also I'm watching a lot of (horror) movies at the moment, and I have seen quite a few in the past because I love horror flicks. Decomposing suspens hopefully helps me to create tension in my game.

I know I'm not making a film but a game, but movies are a great inspiration and help me to get story structures.

    {Terror occulta = Hidden fear}

  • Some sketches with the main character in the middle. I'm not sure about his name yet.

Hi so glad you are doing this Dev-log. Its interesting to see where others get there inspirations and ideas from..

I think your artwork is amazing.. the scene above drags me in and is defiantly 'moody'

where do you get your inspiration for your art?

I'm really looking forward to following your work.. thank you for sharing it..

  • Really looking forward to seeing this one progress!! Outstanding art too!!

  • , Three years on and you have kept the passion ,burning, credit to you, that's probably your most difficult hurdle overcome.

The game looks brilliant graphically and looks like you have attention to detail covered...

I agree there are many survival horrors out there, few are good these days, The Resident Evil series has become die hard with "zombies" even Silent Hill has lost it's fear element...Slenderman is the only game in the last few years that got it nailed, for me.

I think for true scare gameplay you need to be looking back to classics such as Siren (PS2), clocktower (PS1), clocktower 3 (PS2) and of course the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games,on PS1.

I'm sure I'm telling granny how to suck eggs, but just my thoughts...

I been rambling...You obviously pricked an interest here..

  • Interesting! Good 2d horror games are hard to make, true... but it's definitely possible. Take a look at Year Walk, for example:

  • mineet, First of all thank you very much! It's hard to pinpoint where I get my inspiration from. I love to watch good nature documentaries. Getting lost on wikipedia and into the depths of the internet, watching movies. Hearing stories clients tell at my job, listening to music. And also, every morning at work, me and my colleague discuss the weird dreams we had the night before. Great way to train yourself to remember dreams and a great source for new ideas.

  • damainman, Thank you good sir!

  • Thank you Pixel perfick, Yep you're right about that. It will be hard, it is hard, to cut down bits and it probably won't be exactly like how I pictured it three years ago. Also because there is no real deadline I kept changing stuff, which is really counterproductive. But at the same time it gave me better ideas.. At the moment I'm making everything definite.

I've looked into those games but not too much, just to get a sense of the atmosphere and maybe some techniques. I'm scared it will influence me too much so I don't want to delve in too deep. :)

  • , I'll most definitely check that out when I'm home, I'm at work right now. Didn't knew of this game, just had a quick peek and it looks very interesting! Thanks!

Old prototype. Yes, the jumping and running looks odd ;) I'm still improving all the animations.

hi thank you for the reply

its really interesting hearing how certain things inspire you.. I did wonder.. are the trees taken from pictures you have seen. and the house (which I think is amazing)..will the character enter it?

ooo see you have named him now..

  • mineet, Yes..
