Google announces privacy settings change across products; users can't opt out

Google said Tuesday it will require users to allow the company to follow their activities across e-mail, search, YouTube and other services, a radical shift in strategy that is expected to invite greater scrutiny of its privacy and competitive practices.

The information will enable Google to develop a fuller picture of how people use its growing empire of Web sites. Consumers will have no choice but to accept the changes.

The policy will take effect March 1 and will also impact Android mobile phone users, who are required to log in to Google accounts when they activate their phones.

These are the evil mkultra, cointelpro sionist disinfo agents Scirra makes buissnes with. SCARY, HUH?

    Look at this:

    youtube.com/watch

  • See where it says log out?

  • Oh for crying out loud, stop painting Scirra as being involved in some conspiracy. Perhaps that's not what you meant, but it sounds like that's what you're implying. If you actually believe Scirra is in league with the 'enemy' because they have frigging youtube videos or some such, there is such a thing as reading too far between the lines, you eventually start seeing connections that aren't really there as you grasp at the most insignificant of patterns.

    Don't believe everything you think.

Regardless, this is a game development forum. It's not really the place to discuss conspiracy theories, like your post in the megaupload thread. Please discuss them elsewhere.

  • I just want companies to take a stand, and not just go with the flow and try to make money.

By connecting websites to google and facbook tptb are building a huge spy network that gather information about you and me. Sure, google+ is a nifty gadget, but is it worth sacrificing your privacy for?

Edit: This is the OPEN forum. DOes sopa have anything to do with game development? I don't think so.

  • Actually SOPA would have affected game development. Regardless, I meant the Scirra forums in general.

You're free to discuss privacy issues, but please leave the accusations and conspiracy theories out of it.

  • I think you are missing the point Urled. The point is to make a presence, not hide it.

  • I just +1'd this, so the evil empire can read it.

  • I'm not sure what this has got to do with us. Other companies can set whatever privacy policies they like :P

onsumers will have no choice but to accept the changes.

This is nonsense. Nobody's forced to use any Google products. There are alternatives for every single Google product: Bing instead of Google, Bing Maps instead of Google Maps, Dailymotion instead of YouTube, Facebook instead of Google+, any number of mail providers instead of Gmail, iPhone instead of Android, etc. etc. If you don't like Google, just leave! It's rubbish to say you have no choice: you have a choice between accept the new privacy policy, or start using alternatives instead of Google. Plus, if lots of customers are leaving, that puts pressure on Google to change their privacy policy back.

This isn't anything political like SOPA, just ordinary company activity in an open market and you can protest by switching the product you use.

    Personally I don't mind because:

    1) anything Google know about you you probably actually typed in yourself while logged in. If you don't want them to know that info, log out, don't type it in, or use the alternatives (which probably track you just the same anyway). Or, just keep anything serious offline, then all they know is the trivial stuff :)

    2) I still actually trust Google, and the main reason they want to do this is probably actually just to improve the quality of your search results, which is useful to you.

If Bing were as big as Google they'd probably be doing the same to improve their search quality, so I don't think Google is being noticeably evil here.

  • I don't get it. Why complain about this stuff when you aren't forced to put yer real info in these places? I don't trust anything on the internet, my FB, Google, Twitter, Youtube is all fake personal info. My only real info is when I buy something online, and it's not even that bad either. I honestly couldn't give two poops about their privacy policies, it's my info and I share when I want to, not when they tell me.

I actually had a FB account suspended, because I was under the name of "Ezio Auditore", they suspended it (even though I see hundreds of fake obvious names in FB). Anyway, I sent them an angry letter stating this was bull, but they said I had to send them a photocopy of my ID and other stuff, LOOOOOL. I simply wrote back they can shove it up where they like it better and made a new account, still with a fake name.

And I dunno how you are blaming Scirra for this either, each company it's a different entity.

  • Urled posted a link to a Youtube video. If he were really that paranoid, he wouldn't have done that. He's just Trolling for response.
