  • Everytime I open an Exe file from this forum I get this scary feeling that what if someone put some malicious code in the file. Usually I use my virtual pc to check new files but in this case I can't make it run with 3D acceleration. The best thing would be to ship only the project files to file upload services and if you want to protect your code you should upload it to a freeware/shareware site where they check files before publishing.

    Sincerely

    Andla

  • err ... why do you get scary feelings about forum members being malicious? :S

  • Thats one paranoid member there. If you dont trust us then dont come here xD.

  • Chances of someone doing that andla are extremely low. I wouldn't worry. If a post makes you unsure, don't download.

  • Well there is risk associated with running any EXE file at all, and antivirus software is a line of defence against that. I wouldn't run any files off the internet without a virus scanner.

You could always just download the .cap source files if they're provided, so you can check the code etc. yourself.

  • Another option is online virus scanners. Can they check .exes properly?

  • Virus scanners mostly go for viruses and not code like deleting files in your system32 folder. I guess that if it is such a case then the file would be deleted from the forum immediately. But such things can be scheduled for later use like 2 month or a random time. Then non of us would know what hit us or what file was the cause. I just want to warn you guys and gals and I hope you don't ignore this problem.

BTW If you download installrite from http://www.epsilonsquared.com/ you can check what new files where added after a run. It take a snapshot of all files and registrysettings and make another one when you are finnished and compare the difference. Then you can see what new files you have on your hard drive. Firs you can try it out to see what files normally are being added changed or deleted. Get to know your system.

Im scared to use that software, maybe there is some malicious code that can harm my computer :<

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • Paranoid much? Apparently you don't hang out on game making forums all that often, because people are uploading and downloading exe's all the time. Construct exports exes. If you want to play the games, you have to run the programs.

Any good virus scanner will catch a program that's messing with your system files. The better ones have heuristic detection to catch malicious code hiding in an executable waiting to go off. If you're really that nervous, get some decent virus protection.

Or, as they say, "the best form of protection is abstinence." You could just not play the games.

And when I do have a finished game no, I will not upload the cap. It's private. I don't want people stealing my art/resources/code or rebranding it to eBaum's World or something. I'll release my source on examples and tuts, but asking for caps only is asking too much.

  • for virus scanners, i recommend avira's antivir; it's free but don't let that fool you, it's actually one of the best scanners available with the better ones beating it only by speed on scans but antivir still scans at decent speeds and the better ones require money.

this post probably sounds like an automated advertisement but it's not, it's a manually typed advertisement the only reason i advocate it is because i've done secondary research and came to the conclusion that this program isn't just giving you the best bang for your buck but it's just the best one available!

Thanks I will check that out. I currently use AVG. For spyware detection I use adaware and spybot. They have helped me several times.

Actually, if you're paranoid about this, Vista is actually a good operating system to go for! I know it's pretty unpopular, but on Vista applications don't have access to any of your personal/system files on disk, and you'll most likely get a UAC warning if it does attempt anything suspicious. Personally, I'm happy with XP though.

  • I highly recommend Sandboxie.

    http://www.sandboxie.com/

This allows you to run any program in a sandbox, a controlled environment in which the program is unable to modify anything on your PC. It's a great way to test software to make sure it does nothing malicious.

  • Xinok this is very cool, sandboxie I mean. This is a must have.

Ashley>> Yeah vista maybe got millions of features but I choose XP because worry that I will get even more delays and crazy process cpu usage.

  • ... but I choose XP because worry that ...

You worry too much lol. I love Vista. Construct runs fine on it as does all my other software.

I prefer it to XP now.
