Websocket Plugin vs. Modded Zack0Wack0's Socket.io

Discussion and feedback on Construct 2

Post » Thu Feb 21, 2013 3:15 am

So I'm starting with some basic online work, and was wondering what hte difference was between the websocket plugin and Zack0Wack0's Socket.io plugin. Both seem to enable webgames, but I'm not sure which one is supposed to be *better* (in this case, easier to use and smoother to operate). Has anyone done much work with either/both?

I would strongly recommend you just use WebSockets. It's a modern, standards-compliant, widely supported and simpler version of what socket.io does.

Thanks Ashley! This is exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for.

@Ashley
But doesn't socket.io do all this with websockets + other means if websockets aren't available?

(I find socket.io far easier then websockets at this point)

WebSockets are widely supported already, I think the only platforms which don't support it are IE9 (IE10 does) and Android stock browser (Chrome and Firefox for Android do).

It would be great if we had a "example server" + "example client"

Like we do of the socket.io plugin

That would be tremendously helpful. Switching from the modded to the official plug-in would be way easier with that. Any chance of that happening @Ashley?

There are lots of different WebSocket-capable servers around. Have you looked at things like node.js for example?
