  • If you have ever played a game, I believe everyone here did.. What did make you wanna play the game you have seen [what you've seen in screenshots or videos] and what has excited you in that game when you actually played it? [eg. unique level system, potions, fancy swords, atmosphere, HUD etc.]

  • Hmm that's a big question.

I guess it catches my eye when the game presents choices and customizations.

Choices that matter in the game, wich usually means replayabilty and more time to the game.

And customization that you can play your style, and that the game responds to it, be it a regular rpg equipment system, classes, etc..

Maybe for me is easier to think things that really makes me NOT buy a game:

    • Games that were made for mobile and adapted to desktop
    • The millioneth 8 bit classic retro bullet hell mashup zombies roguelike bla bla bla
    • Anime poser s*** XD
  • Thanks, helps a lot :]

  • I will second the customizability and the game's ability to respond to and accommodate user styles. That is the holy grail of gaming, imho.

  • I am too crazy for games!! Games with a lot many stages is very exciting.

  • Anything that looks like a JRPG instantly excites me for some reason. And 90s Lara Croft mmmm

  • Good meaningful story is the reason why I play games. Games that revolve heavily around mechanics do not always manage to keep my interest going for too long.

  • Games with attractive and lovable graphics. Such should receive a try.

For example, a Kirby game. Kirby and company are really adorable and fun. And also, Pokémon games. Some Pokémon are really cute even they were on their final evolutions.

  • A solid soundtrack really gets me going. I'm a music guy at heart, so if I boot up a game and it has catchy/memorable tracks from the get-go, I'll be more likely to play through it for a while.

(of course, if the game outright sucks in every other aspect, then welp.)

  • Hi there!

I'm totally new on this site and forum due to only recently becoming curious about game development and HTML5, so sorry for not being able to contribute just yet in that department.

However, I did grow up playing a ton of videogames, which I still do, so thought I should chip in with my own view on what makes me excited and worried about the games I see and try.

Having grown up in the arcades during the 80s and 90s, I instantly became a fan of simulator and versus type of games, such as the fighting and sport games. This has given me a certain "digital" input skill which makes me eagerly enjoy reactionary games that require fast inputs and decision making. The soundtrack is also a major part in how I feel about a game, similarly as shared by user SNN1135.

However, I suffer from the so called "Quake" syndrom which renders me helpless playing games that have quick changing camera angles like all first person shooters as well as plenty in 3rd person. Somehow the Japanese producers seem to be more wary of the problem and "limit" the camera angle movements. There are too many western developed games that I truly want to play but am forced to avoid.

The PS4 game, Until Dawn, was a game I recently had the opportunity to play and was positively surprised at how the camera angles became no issue at all. The game was made slow enough for it to not be a factor. Still I am always worried that the next great looking game to be released has not gone through enough testing to avoid motion sickness in games, perhaps because the issue (Quake syndrom) isn't very present among western gamers?

Sorry if this type of issue and discussion belongs in another part of the forum.

    Regards,

    Daniel.

  • I like it when a game forces you to think creatively. That's why I like Zelda so much, great puzzles!

  • For me:

    • Games that are not rip offs, and has their own ideas.
    • Great presentation. (nicely 'orchestrated' scenes, cohesive gameplay)
    • Always have something EXTRA (customization, side quests, easter eggs etc.).
    • Give me a sense of belonging/engagement.

Yea, we are relying on #2 and #4 for our game.

  • I like freedom in games... sometimes you have games that are a constant challenge over and over... I like areas where you can 'play' and be free and not worry about dying or failing. I love the challenges of all games.. I just appreciate games that have built-in breathers..

    Welcome to the forums.

I've never heard of Quake syndrome in my life thus far, so my experience supports this hypothesis.
