What's the word on timed video ads and such with Construct 2

  • Hi everyone,

I've inquired in the past about video ads and I've been informed that admob offers interstitial ads, but the question was kinda slated for interstitial and video, but I'm not sure if admob has video ads. I'm thinking they don't from what I can read.

Seeing games like skyline skaters have videos that play that are clearly more than just displaying a page. they have a timer that counts down. there seems to be some kind of validation that occurs to let the server know the person watched the full video and then grant the player whatever incentive the game developer wants to give for completing a video.

It just seems like this is a very specific / deeper thing than displaying an ad banner or a full screen static interstitial ad.

Is there any service out there that offers one of these video services? This article was interesting. http://developers.magmic.com/top-10-ad- ... ook-games/ Flurry seems to offer ads too, but all i see about flurry talk is analtyics in C2 forums.

Seeing it's a growing trend in popular games, it would be great to have a comprehensive thread that discusses this in depth. I can't imagine it's too much for Construct 2 to handle, but I'm not seeing any clear threads out there that discuss a solution for these kind of ads.

    Thanks!

    Caleb

  • I'm reaching out to Millennial Media to hopefully find some kind of solution. They support ads and have an office here in Boston. I'm friends with a game dev who works over there and he's going to get me in touch with someone at their Baltimore office.

The dream would be to make a case for creating an official plugin, but I had no luck with MixPanel stepping up to do that, but I'll try these folks as well.

Has anyone had experience with this before? Video ads are red hot right now for monetizing in games and it would seem like we should be actively trying to find a solution for this somehow.

I've also sent an email to scirra support to see if they have any suggestions / insight on a solution for this also

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • No experience in it sorry, but the way cut the rope 2 incorporates it into the game itself is brilliant. Definitely would love to do the same, in some form or another.

  • I'm not sure how that works. IIRC I bought the paid version (if there is even a distinction anymore) but i've never seen ads in it. how are they unique?

Skyline Skater for iOS is a great example of really using all social media hooks to generate posts, tweets and ad views.

You'll have to ask my son, lol. No what I understand, or rather what I saw, is as you progress in game, you get a tv spot, you can watch a ad and get whatever it is you get. Sometimes to move on requires you to watch ad (video or full page - i think)

I haven't looked for awhile. I put kids tablet into flight mode. Disables ads - shht, you aren't supposed to know.

But some of these big games really make use of every avenue, and they do it in style.

  • DUTOIT heh heh, yea i should remember airplane mode also for my son when he plays.

but yea I'm eager to know if this works because it's what's hot right now. it doesn't seem like it would be hard to do or a problem, but if there isn't an object in C2 that facilitates this with Admob which i'm pretty sure does not do video ads from all the digging around and experience and even if it does, these particular ads seem "smarter" than just some banner popup.. they have a timer that counts down and it seems like a call is made bad to the server when the video is done to insure the customer saw the full video before giving the reward to avoid cheating (airplane mode makes me wonder)

I'm not sure. I would suspect the counter is on their side. They get a trigger video started, then it locks mobile till video is ended. I know, you can't exit - lol.

Airplane mode, no video plays, it just says check internet connection or something then goes back to game.

Haven't looked at admob, been busy with leadbolt, but client not happy with them. So will be looking for other ways. Currently, I don't know if advertising can make much money. Sure 1000,000 plays, but even 50,000 not much revenue.

Monetizing via ads I have ZERO EXPERIENCE, but I hope to branch out and stop doing NDA work so might have to learn soon.

  • yea i figured they would require internet for the vids to work, just never tried it.

but yea I'm in agreement with you about the ads and monetizing, you seriously have to have a lot of views before it even matters.

My understanding though is that the videos pay better than admob and i'm 99% sure admob ads interstitial are still imagines.

Truth is that an initial launch probably shouldn't even worry about ads until you get some critical mass going. IAP should be fine for your early adopters for a game. The ads become something nice to weave into a game once you have a strong following if you ask me, but yea any way you slice it, video ads are really hot and especially since we don't have the possibility of using services like upsight (formerly playhaven) as an option which last time I checked was the best payout for installs of other games through your app.

Mind sharing some details. We're using leadbolt too and not happy with them.

  • so yea at this point i'm using XDK / Cordova for iOS / Android. I highly recommend you buy the Cranberry plugin suite. He has created a vungle plugin that my initial tests for iOS have been successful with adhoc builds. I haven't tried it in a live build yet, but everything would indicate that it will be fine.

Admob has been good for me, but it's video ads are not really the kind of ads you see in games like crossy road or skyline skaters, which Vungle is.

  • But what about some SDK integration? For example Chartboost has that kind of video ads in their latest SDK.

Does somebody did it with C2 made games (I mean SDK integration)?
