I was wondering what software do you guys use for composing music & sounds for games.
I myself been downloading them and I wish to make them myself.

if you use Mac, I would suggest garage band, otherwise use Audacity, which is free to use, but you need to get your own samples to play with. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

A few music software suggestions (all free):
Bosca Ceoil - Difficulty: *
BeepBox - Difficulty: **
Famitracker - Difficulty: ***
Anvil Studio - Difficulty: ****
(dificulty is just how complex the program is)

I use Sonar as my DAW (difficult but with professional results--don't use it if you're starting out) and then a few East West libraries for sounds as well as recording some live instruments to combine them into the mix. I use a large variety of vsti instruments for synth stuff, too. And then round it out with a few effects processors. I actually use the same tools largely for sound effects, just with other recorded samples mixed in.

You can hear a demo of some of my music in the link in my signature.

The best free application that I can remember and would recommend is LMMS
http://lmms.sourceforge.net

Reaper is affordable and pretty damn good!
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
As you can see on the purchase page there are two licenses, you would most likely qualify for the discounted rate of $60 which you can still use for commercial use! Read the panel to the left on the licensing page =]

Fruity Loops is another that I have used a lot but I no longer have access to it =\ it's not too expensive from what I remember, I will be purchasing a license of my own soon enough I think :P

Kind Regards
Patriick
