Where exactly is C3 headed?

  • I have been excited for C3 since I heard about it and remained excited through all the features announcements thinking the changes are mostly kind of neat but not really things I plan on utilizing. I still plan to sub day 1 since I have loved C2 over the years and feel like you have earned my money but I am a little confused as to what the plans are post release as far as major feature changes.

I thought the idea was to generally make it the best 2D game engine but in a recently locked petition on the forums Ashley wrote this.

[quote:1gshnv34]Remember that if you're keen to see major new features like 3D, timelines, modularity or collaboration, we're very much limited by our resources, and it's difficult to make the jump to hiring new developers if we have a less stable income.

This concerns me because you have 3D which is 0 interest to me within Construct and a game changer for the engine. It also lists collaboration but your suggestion platform's 1st and 4th highest voted ideas are both listed as currently not planned and they are the basics for collaboration.

I love Construct and know you're under constant harassment over your decisions with C3 but I really want to stay a customer and your making it hard to justify. Your company's communication is giving off the impression your focusing on a successful business model rather than making a solid product that is worth the money over Construct 2.

  • The point is if you want major new features to be added, the business needs a stable income to be able to develop them.

I threw in a few major feature requests to illustrate the point. The fact I mentioned them is not necessarily a statement of our roadmap.

I appreciate the reply and understand the point but if your asking us for money because the roadmap to a better C3 requires it than it should be more clear what major features your looking to implement. I was really excited about the suggestion platform and the responses on there aren't encouraging. A few items already moved to declined with only the suggestion that it's not needed and better handled elsewhere and only 1 idea in the planned section.

I don't want to invest in C3 if the roadmap is to put all the future development into reaching more people by making the application more accessible and eventually adding 3D.

  • Our latest blog explains our near future plans in detail, as well as new features it should cover.

I havn't seen many people requesting Construct to become a full 3D engine, and I don't think it should become one either. But I think some form of rudimentary 3D transforms would be cool. Kind of like what you can do CSS, for flipping cards, UI elements, and rotating stuff in more than one direction, at most possibility to add some simple models like coins, pickups, etc in 2D games would be cool.

And maybe at least taken into consideration for 3rd party plugin developers if they wish to do some 3D plugin.

    This.

Some normal maps, some lighting etc for "2.5D" ish stuff.

Plug developers could do a 3D plugin engine as other engines seems to have done.

BUT...I would say esp w.r.t growing and building a businesss if they later get 3D experts and work on another engine perhaps rather.

    Construct 3D...keeping the two seperate.

    Anyway, I guess we just need C3 first <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing">

  • I have to admit that Construct3 is really well done and there is a huge potential in this kind of web applications. Scirra is obviously ahead of its time with their approach and I believe that it will pay off eventually.

It's a real pleasure to work with C3 but the export options are kind of a deal breaker. At the moment the subscription model isn't justified, but if in the future the export options will really cover mobile, consoles and pc, I will happily pay the price.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Creating a 3D engine that would compete with Unity and Unreal would be challenging. However, I would love to code in C3 for a 3D game. It would make the development process so much easier.

If scirra ever goes down that road, an exported game would have to look comparable to Unity and Unreal which is difficult. If the game looked about 98% as good, then people would flock to C3.

Here is an example of unreal export to web assembly. I

  • There's an event sheet plugin for Unity if you're interested. It's pretty affordable too.

I tried the GameFlow when it was just released, but it didn't come anywhere close to C2 regarding the work flow and usability. It was quite long time ago and maybe it deserves another shot. At least the export options are superior compared to C2/C3

    This +1

For me, an expedient replacement of the xdk service, with an in house (apk etc.) cloud build service as blogged, is the deal breaker.

Question Ashley for future planning purposes, is there a release timetable for this proposed service as xdk finishes at the end of June?, as the alternatives do not seem very enticing to me, so I would like to have some kind of time frame of when this/your service will be live.

I don't use the plugin, I just know it exists. It's been updated recently. If you have it already, maybe you can get a free update?
