  • Now that GameMaker Studio is released (or very shortly), GM:HTML5 ($99) will no long be for sale. At $99 it was only $20 more than C2 which wasn't bad. Now, in order to make HTML5 games with GM you have to buy GameMaker Studio ($99) then the HTML5 exporter ($99) for a total of $198! You'd really have to love GM to pay an extra $119 just to use it for HTML5 instead of C2. Furthermore, they want an extra $199 for every exporter! Compared to the free CocooonJS, AppMobi, and impending Awesomium exporters you get with C2... GM is a complete rip-off. Officially the best $32 I've spent in a long time! (I'd still be happy if I had paid $79).

    EDIT: As Wink pointed out the HTML5 export is $99. A while ago they said each export would cost an additional $199. Looks like they changed their minds about HTML5. Sorry for the misinformation, I've corrected the above numbers.

    Also agreed on the incredible deal that the early adopter licenses prices were and how the current price still feel so fair (even more when you compare to its "opposition").

  • I wonder if their exporter is just another HTML5 wrapper (like PhoneGap/CocoonJS/Appmobi/Awesomium for PC/Mac) or an actual native app export ?

    If it's a native app export then it probably will run faster compared to the HTML5 wrapper version right ? (and no more sound problem ?)

  • I always trust Scirra, it's worth than anything for some people who have no knowledge in programming.

    We call it "Hybrid", it's a fusion bewteen web technology and native app.

    About the speed, it depends, if you plan to deploy a game for Android, use CocoonJS, otherwise, if you plan to deploy a game for iOS, use appMobi.

    btw... after searching on their forum, looks like one of the admin said GM Studio produce a native app (instead of using wrapper like CocoonJS/AppMobi)

    All Studio targets are native so
    iOS, Android, Mac etc are native
    applications HTML5 is javascript native.

    What i'm interested is how's the performance of their exported app compared to the CocoonJS/Appmobi version (it should be reasonably a bit faster right ? since it's all native and all that )

  • I was waiting to get CocoonJS launcher in app store because it's getting to be approved soon... (sigh, apple employees are slowers).

    I need to test performance on my game in my iPod tocuh 4

  • I played a bit with GM Studio during the beta and while the product is good It did not seem as easily extensible as Construct.

  • I think it all comes down to what you want to do. Currently If you want to make games as a hobby/small money/prototyping, then C2 is a good tool for that, but if you want to develop for the mobile devices and for real money then Game Maker Studio looks like a good deal for that.

    Having native export to Android and iOS is a big thing and $298 is not much for that.

    AppMobi costs $100 per year and is limited to 5 apps/year.

    I like Construct2 and I believe it has a chance to become standard software for HTML5 along with something like Spaceport.

    I do have faith for CocoonJS and I really hope it works. I currently don't have a wireless connection, so I can't test their launcher.

    Well, you can't test iOS games until you pay 99 $ per year to test the games in Game Maker Studio, dammit Apple. Also there a lot of requirements to develop iOS game than Android. So PC can't do anything...

    Blame Apple.

    And don't forget + $99 (HTML5 export module) = $596

    They quit making Game Maker HTML5 yesterday. So now if you just wanted to make HTML5 games with Game Maker it will cost you $200.

  • Joannesalfa - you can probably get by OK testing your game on Safari using Preview-on-LAN. Once it works there it should be straightforward to wrap for the app store.
