In my attempt to build my first game, and learn the program with the help of my friend, I built a PlayBox game that has a lot of elements I was testing to make sure I could get the game to do what I wanted first. The end result was a little fun Zombie game with Rounds, a Score, a pistol, a flashlight, Lighting elements, and Zombie AI.. and a little bit of atmospheric elements.

In the beginning you start by turning on your flashlight ((///Controls explained at bottom///))

and follow the arrow on the floor to exit the spawn. Once out, you will enter a larger room but small with nowhere to go.. wait a few moments and there are 3 doors that will trigger and open at different times. once Out and about in the main room.. watch out for slow mobile zombies that will sneak up on you in the dark. when you run out of ammo the gun will auto reload or you can do that manually. Either way, when you reload the flashlight will go out for a moment.. so be careful not to run out of bullets at the wrong time. //infinite ammo reloads// [Remember This Is A Test Game]

As you get down to the last 3 or 4 zombies in each round you will hear dramatic music until you kill them. Then the next wave starts. Every time you get to a new Wave of zombies there will be more spawning for you to kill each round. There is no end.. so just see how far you can go.

Important Note: There is only one weapon so far. I know I need to add more. But being my first game I wanted to make sure I got things right first. I have Lots of planning and ideas for a Much Larger project and use for this game that is Story Based.

More Important Note:When you open the game you will first be taken to an interactive splash screen which will later act as the title menu.. Feel free to play around with the Particle FX cursor I made.

NOTE: I took out one sound file, the dramatic music when coming to the end of a zombie wave. Its a smaller file, but takes away the element of knowing when you finished a wave. for faster download time.

And here is a peak of what is in the ZIP File:

NOTE:The .EXE file is completely safe and is the Game.. However if you do not trust it, I also threw in the .CAP file so you can open it straight from the Construct engine

This is a test, and I am looking for feedback to see if I am heading in the right direction.

On a side note, I do strongly plan on fixing the way the Player moves, he glides a little which is fine, but not the final effect I'm looking for. Working on more weapons, interactive toggles and switches, and exploding surroundings. Dialog and interaction with AI characters WIP

  • This is actually Pretty Good! I like the atmosphere.. I had fun playing this! it was a little easy at first, or so I thought and I actually jumped when a zombie snuck up behind me cuz I wasn't expecting it.. then it got pretty hard as they started piling in, in the later rounds.. Obviously going for a step up for something bigger here But I can't wait to find out what it is.. Definitely worth looking into..

I saw some pretty interesting FX I hadn't seen in other games before.

I see you noted on something you said you were going to work on.. so I suppose there's not much else to say.. but yea, can't wait to see what other weapons you put in here

I also noticed that the Background in your menu screen was moving around.. that was Trippy.. I didn't even notice at first it was soo suttle but right on!

    Good JOB!!

    I recommend playing it a few times!~

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • You are using shaders a little too liberally. For example, removing the lens layer, I see no noticeable difference to the game what-so-ever and gain an average of 20 fps overall.

You should try and aim for minimal shader use. If you want more people to play your game, it has to run well on even the slowest of systems.

Thank you for the input. When I actually look at it, I'm not sure why I still had the lens layer active. I also try to keep in mind that my skills are graphics and art, and programming is new territory for me. So I appreciate all input.

Reality is, making the game run faster has been my #1 priority lately, now that I got my hands dirty, now it's a matter of figuring out how. It has bugged me that it's slowing on some systems. Which in my case wasn't something I was aware of when first learning this.

  • Everything else seems like you are on a good track.

So the only real thing I would say is each time you are going to use a shader, check to see if there is a way to get the look you want without it first. Example might be to just make an animation of the warp effect, instead of actually using it.

    Anyways, good luck to you!

  • I love zombie games

I can see this becoming like a 2D overhead version of L4D or something.

    Nice atmosphere!

There's a Left 2 Dead game out there somewhere (probably a few), based on Left 4 Dead only 2D, hence it's name, saw one just the other day, wasn't easy either.. dammit.

  • WONDERFUL!! I found a cap =))) Now I can stop wallowing in my noobishness on everything covered here! Thank you so much. I needed this badly.

  • Awesome game with a great atmosphere! Ran just fine on my laptop.

Perhaps there should be a real DL section for tutorials and example files? It can get somewhat annoying having to DL from links found in a forum. (For example, anyone ever heard of SFGHQ? I learned MMF solely from the tuts section there.)

    Blame me for that, sorry...

I put my hand up to make a download database for stuff like this ages ago, but I kind of ended up not having the time... mainly due to the job I had (which was rather flexible) ending up going down the drain.

Also, the site popularity got pretty out of control pretty fast I there was no way one man could keep up with it.

Maybe we can try to put something together if enough people are willing to help, though we have to decide if it's even worth it since most people are so helpful here any problems are usually fixed/helped with.

  • The animation of this game attracts more people to try it. It uses flashlight and this is really one of a kind game. Players are always excited to spend time with this game.

  • Wow.. It has been a long time since I've come back to this project. Got stuck in the real world. Doing FX for True Blood and other arty stuff. I Really appreciate everyones' comments very much and hopefully I will get back to this and do everything I said I was going to do soon after I move!!

Here and now I will actually propose Suggestions of what people would possible like to see out of this game (BTW: this is going to be story driven and not just a Nazi Zombie rip off lol)

  • You inspired me to make my own game that used your flashlight and shadow idea.

  • I am honored lol. It would be fun to see what you come up with! so, let me know.. I would enjoy playing it.. I hope :)

    And good luck to you!

  • Thank you for your Comments, I appreciate it. Do to a lot of work I grew into in the entertainment industry.. I have had this little game on the shelf for far tooo long. I remember building it, which was my first real game project ever. Hopefully I can improve upon it someday.

I noticed your name was BadWolf.... By any Chance, that is not a relation to {Doctor Who} is it?
