Im currently making a sidescroller shmup.
it is my first game.
Dont know anything about programming but after a lot of trial and error and help from forum members I think I now "get" the way construct events work...mostly....sort of....
as far a how to make a shmup ...well I dont really have a clue what what I am doing. Ive tried playing a lot to study the elements that make them fun and challenging and trying to decipher the mechanics behind the colorful sprites.
But mostly I Just make things in construct 2/3, if it works I keep it if it doesn't, which is often, then I try again and again and again until it does.
So, it is a slow process, compounded by the fact that i have very limited time, a couple of hours a weekend, to spend on it.
also, it appears that even a simple shmup game has a lot more stuff going on behind the scenes than I had ever appreciated. so the "engine" code / events has turned into a bit of a monster now and there is still not even much happening on the screen
However there is great satisfaction in finally seeing something you have been working on for days / weeks come together and work.
I think that it is chasing this buzz that keeps me coming back to try to finish off the monster that I have birthed.
